Viper 5204

Looking to get a Viper 5204 installed in my truck, mostly because I want the remote start feature, but some people have been messing with my truck and since I don't go out to it every day I'd like a proximity sensor so I know when people are around it.

My question is, my VSM has been fried since I got the truck, do I need to get a new one and get it programmed at the dealer for a couple hundred bucks, or will the viper work even if the VSM doesn't?
