2002 expedition neutral safety switch problem?

New to this forum. 2002 expedition 5.4 eddie bauer, 188k miles. recently will intermittently not start, turn key & will not crank in park or N. some days no problem. Battery tested fine. I replaced the starter & solenoid, ran fine for a day then same issue. Eventually moving shift lever thru positions seems to "fix" issue so it starts. Could it be the neutral safety switch? any tricks/tips to replacing it? I've searched the forum & have read some of the posts about this, but wanted opinion before I replace the switch. sorry if I missed the post with the answer to this.

Check for "slop" in your shift lever.

If it's fine, observe the THEFT light during starting attempts.

Thank you for the response. No slop. I ck'd the torx screws. theft light comes on when key turned on then goes off. all dashlight indicators come on when key turned to on position, then go off when key turned to start, they come back on when key turned back to on. starter does not crank.

Do your brake lights work when stepping on pedal?

Yes brake lights work. They also work when trying to start & stepping on brake pedal.

I would say it is the NSS, or in our case it's called the Digital Transmission Range Sensor (DTRS).

Thanks Alloro. Is it just an unbolt, bolt & alignment replacement installation?

unbolted 2 bolts. Is that a nut on the center shaft? Not a "traditional" nut, it has 2 flat sides. Didn't want to try & force this without being sure.
