Got a Question for yall, My mother has a 2000 ford expedition 5.4 4x4 it has somewhere around 235xxx miles (not exactly positive) but the engine only has around 150xxx its always ran good and gave no problems until yesterday, she left work stopped at a store cut it off it was running fine, she came back out and it will turn over great but will not crank up. she had it towed here and I checked it last night but it was around 9, so i just went threw all the fuse's and relay's again everything seems to be fine, you can hear what seems to be the fuel pump come on when you turn on the key (i have a 97 F-150 and they sounded similar) I was gonna try to attempt to make sure it had fuel to the rail, and check pressure but dont seem to locate a pressure point on the rail.... did I over look it somewhere? also is there anything else i can check?
when it comes to these newer vehicle's im not the brightest, but i do have enough mechanical experience to work on trucks (been threw my 77 ford more times than I care to count)
If someone has a Idea please let me know, i already miss My F-150 going to work that F350 just isnt as good of a around town commuter!
Try carb cleaner or starting fluid to see if you can get it to pop a few times. That would at least let you know if fuel is an issue. Other than that, I would urge you to get a scanner and check the computer for any trouble codes. The problem with it not starting could end up being in the codes and save a lot of guesswork.
I dont have a scanner, and i doubt my programmer for my diesel would pull the codes on a gas vehicle (itll pull codes on the diesel's) guess i could load it up and take it to advanced or something and let them scan it but i dont trust half them people. only other option i guess would be taking it to a garage or buying one... neither of which will end up cheap for her or me. o well may try the starter fluid here in a minute.
looks like fuel pump. as long as i feed it starter fluid it will crank and run, I assume there is no accessing this from the side with out dropping the tank is it? ive changed a few fuel pumps in newer vehicles with pumps in the tank. the 01 GMC you had to drop the tank or remove bed, My jeep Comanche you didnt have to.
This may not be the case since you said you thought you could hear the pump, but before you start dropping tanks and stuff. On my 2000 there is a fuel inertia switch behind the passenger side kick pannel under the glove box. Remove the pannel and I would check to see if maybe it some how got tripped before taking stuff apart. It works like a circuit breaker in the case of an accident it shuts down power to the pump. If it has the air ride also, the switch for this is down there too. The air ride is a little higher and if you are looking at the withches to the left I believe. The inertia switch has a round push button reset on the top of the switch. If it is popped just push it back down and try to start it again. It may take a while for the pump to fill the lines back up so dont give up after the first crank.
Also on my 5.4 the fuel pressure valve is on the passenger side fuel rail I believe. I do remember it looks just like a tire valve. Mine has a black cap just like a tire valve.
Beside a possible clogged fuel filter, there is a fuel pressure regulator that if stuck open would prevent PSI from building up even if the pump is running.
somthing similar happen to me not to long ago my navi died on me while Driving, luckly i wasnt to far from my house but it ended up being the Gasoline i pump never again am i gonna buy Flashfood Gas! but anyways i removed the fuel pump and connected it to the battery and it still worked , but the fuel inside was nasty black and chunky;kinda like cement mix but after new spark plugs, 2 coils , 1 fuel filter, its running better then ever
dropped the tank and put in a new pump and strainer (the hole sending unit was like 300 bucks but just the pump/strainer was like 120) and put it back together and charged the battery's and it cranked up and run rough for a minute then cleared up and its running fine now, figure it took it a minute to catch up
