Hey I just swapped a 460/T-18 into my 79 f-250. My old clutch return spring that goes from the clutch fork to the motor perch and keeps the throwout bearing off the pressure plate fingers is shot and I need a new one. Anyone know where to get a new one or know of something else that will work?
Most parts stores have a "universal" clutch spring you should be able to use. LMC has one, P/N 40-3201 14" long $10.95. You can probably get a similar spring locally, cheaper.
From your description, it sounds like the one you had was hooked up wrong. The front of the springs hooks to a bracket on the frame rail, not the mount perch.
I just went back and looked at the diagram and I may be wrong . The setup I was thinking of is shown for the F150/250 4WD (detail A). It's not real clear, but it looks like the spring does at least hook to the crossmember or perch.
I broke my spring a couple of years ago and I just went to my local hardware store and picked one up that was the same size for a few bucks (Plus a spare). It's still in use today and works great.
