Heads advice

I have the very crappy 1972 heads on my 460 and was looking to get a set of heads to use for a couple years until i rebuild my engine and go to aluminum heads, I am looking at either D3VE or D0VE heads, what would work with my stock pistons i know D0VEs would bump compression way up but is is possible with my stock pistons or should i just get the D3VE smog heads and what would my compression look like with the two sets of heads

the compression with the D2 heads and the D3 heads should be about the same as the chambers are pretty close to the same volume. the D2 heads were around 100cc and the D3 are around 95cc give or take. i think the compression ratio was around 8 or 8.5:1 in 72. this is of course assuming that the engine still has the dished pistons and not flat tops.

going to the the early heads (C8, C9 or D0VE heads) will raise the compression approx 1 pt. a good compromise in my opinion. if you have flat tops in the engine, going with the early heads will raise the compression to around 11 or 12:1. way too hi for pump gas.

When I bought my 77 a couple of years ago, it had the D2VE-AA heads. I went through the engine last winter and, although I have a set of C9VE heads, I decided to continue to use the D2VE heads. The engine in stock form has an 8.5:1 CR. I don't want it any higher. The engine is not turned over 4,500 rpm. I also live at 4700 feet so, other things being equal, I can use a lower octance fuel than I could if I were at a low elevation. I have 4,000 miles on the rebuild. I have not experienced detonation thus far. No doubt these heads won't work in a high performance application but, in mine they are okay-my 2 cents worth.

dove heads?

dove or c9ve can easily upgraded to adjustable drivetrain. screw in studs are simple upgrade. question is on positive stop studs or not positive stop studs? the quench chamber helps a little. if wanting to upgrade your cast iron heads MPG Heads - Index does a nice little cnc port job on these heads and helps the flow out and works the turndowns at intake. run this in my 4wds for many yrs now. if curious contact scott and will help you out.

Good to know about MPG heads, Wyoming 4X4. Those C9VE heads are on a429 4BBL out of a TBird. When I find the right vehicle for that engine, those heads will get some work.
