What engine stand?

How much does a stock FE weigh? A pal has a hoist and stand I can use but have read a couple stories here about stands breaking and motors falling. I do not want to experience that mess first hand but don't want to have to buy a huge diesel stand either.

What capacity stand would be appropriate?

The motors weigh ~ 650 i think. I have a 1200 lbs. stand and it makes it sag. This is a case where bigger is better.

I picked up this stand (used once if they guy wasn't lying!) off CL for $70. Looks as if it will do the job nicely and is nearly new.

Big Red 1500 Pound Engine Stand | Product Details | Pep Boys

Also got a hoist from him for an additional $70 that is a mate to the stand and appears as new.

You think?

Seriously doubt it will be an issue.

Rated at 2x the motor weight and held together with grade 8 bolts.....

I can't imagine its too weak for the task....

I was one that had the 1,000 lb. stand fail on my 428 CJ motor. It will never see another stand rated under 2,000 lbs.

Also make sure to get grade 8 bolts to hold that engine to the stand.I had a steel headed 460 on a 1200 lb four leg stand for over a year.I would keep away from those cheap offshore stands that might only hold a SBF shortblock. But I agree that quality is important.

I ended up using that one I linked to earlier. I DID use grade 8 bolts. Wouldn't have considered anything less stout. The stand barely moves. I had a friend drill a couple holes in two of the arms effectively shortening them about an inch so I could mount up using the top four holes and keep the center of gravity at a reasonable spot. Motor is now down to the short block and is a bit bottom heavy, but not too heavy to invert by myself and the pin holds it nicely so I can have access to the underside.
