Hub protector? You need to take the hub and rotor off the truck and then take the studs off the hub and you can separate the hub and rotor. Hope this helps.
Snap ring? It's been a while but I think there is a snap ring in there before you can take the nuts off. You don't want your nuts falling off when you're going down the road.
Well I just got the socket on and used a breaker bar. There was a lot of shavings and the threads are jacked up on the spindle & spindle nut
I'm not sure how you got that socket on the nut because it's the wrong one! The 4 point socket is used for MANUAL hubs with 2 spindle nuts and a lock washer between them! AUTO hubs use a single six point nut with a lock 'ring' that slides down the keyway and wraps around the spindle!
That's what I mean. It was like a normal but 2 3/4 socket with rounded edges and a keeper thing. I think that somebody else attempted working on it in the past & screwed it up. The nut broke loose than about 1/2 way it got hard to turn. I forced it off. Did everything. And cleaned the threads. ( took a impact wrench and drove the nut on full it went on smoothly ). Probably not the best idea but for now I'll keep an eye on it and make sure everything's still tight. ( don't want the whole tire rotor etc to come off while driving down the road.
There is a keeper that slides in the keyway of the spindle and then wraps around the spindle. Needle nose pliers, pulls right out. My guess is that you twisted it off when you forced the nut off. This is what keeps the nut from backing off, must have this part!!!!!! Do a search for hub diagram, it should show this part. MUST have this part!!! If you ever change those auto hubs for man, keep me in mind. I am always looking for spares to put on the shelf.
throw nut, keepers and everything but the bearings and hubs in the trash and get a set of manual hubs and the conversion nut kit to replace it.
those lock rings break a lot, if broken on driver side wheel comes loose. if on passenger side nut tightens and burns up the bearings.
