After reading thru Alaskan Ex's thread on his accident I'm curious if an aftermarket front bumper would have saved him some injury and saved the truck ?
Would it have just transfered the energy thru the bumper and damaged some other area of the truck ? I see the picture posted at the end of his thread were the Ex t boned the car. Doesn't look like any damage to the Ex but it is a different type of accident. Sheet metal and door support beams are much weaker than a front end hit.
What are everyones thoughts on this ?
No opinions on aftermarket bumpers ? I see some of you have them... are they all around the $2k mark ?
I've seen Road Armor, Fusion .. what other brands are out there ?
You might as well ask what everyone thinks about K&N filters.
Like anything else, a big beefy bumper is a compromise. As you know, the big bumper will likely survive a nuclear bomb, but the energy has to be absorbed somewhere.
Personally, I would love to have one just to fend off deer strikes.
I compare it to all the crash tests I have seen for smart cars.
Sure, the vehicle has stayed "fairly" intact in the event of a severe front end incident, but you have also effectively removed the safety factor and you have no crumple zones.
that energy has to go somewhere, and well, that is you and your passengers.
You can find them for good prices on your local Craigs List. I've seen the Ranch Hand type for less than $300.00. Here's one in my area. I'm glad I have one, I can mow down Zombies when the time comes and not worry about cracking my pretty grill.
it all depends on the amount of force that is involved in the accident. these big bumpers save the front end by transferring most damage from the front (and if it has a grille guard it also transfers some of the higher up energy) down lower to the frame and away from the weaker grille and sheet metal areas. now that energy is put to the frame and can save the front end. in a major accident though it can bend, twist or damage the frame while saving everything else unless the frame movement results in damage.
im going to buy a big bumper guard sometime hopefully soon because there are lots of wildlife out here that absolutely love walking into trucks!
another big thing is good extra lights, my bumper guard mounted lights on my exploder definitely saved me from a major accident! but thats a different situation entirely
in my case it would have just made the impact worse then it was. the frame ended up being bent 6" to the right and 3" up. if i had a stiffer bumper i think the frame damage would have been worse then it already was(enough that it totaled the truck).
even with that said, if i could find a decent price on a nice beefy bumper i would buy one!
Given the type of accident that Russ had, I think there would have been frame bending, but little to no damage to grill and fenders if he had a heavy bumper. I doubt that some bumpers like my Buckstop would need more than paint. The bending would have been less I think, due to the large mass of the bumper.
When you take in the idea that the bumper would have remained intact, more of the energy would have been transferred into the smaller car than was the case with the OEM bumper, causing far worse damage to it.
It might have been lights out for the driver of the car.
Ever since I put the Buckstop bumper on my vehicle, I have been concerned with what it would do to another vehicle if I hit them. I have changed my driveing somewhat, giving even longer stopping distances, watching even better for potential trouble, etc.
The bumper is great for the low speed fender bender, the grazed bump in the parking lot, and for pushing down the occasional tree. I never want to find out what it can do in a crash. It will allow me and mine to survive better, I'm sure, but I definately do not want to be the one that causes the crash. Of course no one does, and, like with Russ's accident, you never know where the other vehicle will come from.
very true and its hard to say what "could" have happened. all i can say is i'm glad i didnt hurt the lady in the car. also glad i did not get hurt any worse..hard to think what a harder impact would have felt like.
Started the research ,showed the pictures of the accidents with and without the aftermarket bumper and she's all for it. I didn't really mention the price though...
I like the front bumper, not so much the rear but that's just my opinion. I wasn't paying attention this morning and pulled into my parking spot a little too far and hit a light pole with a concrete base. Chipped the post pretty good and scuffed the paint on my bumper. With a stock bumper that would've left a good size dent. I don't need my coffee this morning cuz that woke me up pretty quick.

I run Buckstop Bumpers on three of our four trucks. Quality product, excellent fitment and they work!
