New Project! Need some help please!

Hey guys I just picked up a 97 Ford expedition 4.6L 2wd for a new project! I have a few questions on some upgrades I would like to do.

First off the truck was a theft recovery. So I'm in the process of replaceing the steering coloumn and getting new keys for it.

First thing isI would like to ditch the wires and coil packs and convert over to coil on plug ignition.

Any ideas on what I would need to do it? I know I would need the c.o.p's, harness. Would I need a newer computer?

I'm also pulling my dash tomorrow to replace the main harness that runs to all the doors. Anything I should replace since I have the dash pulled?

Any other upgrades/ updates I could do to the truck?

Thanks in advance!!!

On coils, no you can't change over without a later computer and harness.
The later computer controls coils seperately.
Then the later program would not be a correct calibration for the vehichle.
Some of the differences in calibration is the engine build, vehichle weight and trans shifting dynamics, gear ratio, speed detection etc.
For example the later motors are built with different piston crowns and combustion chamber volumes and a small change in compression ratio with a head upgrade.
On dash replacement; if it is full electronic with the PATS system you would need a computer reflash to get it to work again and start the motor.
Back to the coil conversion again, that computer 'marrys' the dash with the electronic dash and PATS so you would have an issue right there.
Better to put the vehichle back to stock config and have less hassle.
If you run into issues there are few places to get help so you become the expert on that vehichle.
Good luck.

I would agree with Bluegrass, you're asking for a nightmare changing from the coil packs.

Actually I wish my 5.4l had coil packs. The c.o.p. design can be a real big hassle to change the coil on. Cylinders 4, 7, and 8 on my truck require many "bad" words to change. I don't see a big plus in the c.o.p. over the coil pack anyway.

Well out of all the f150's that I have and have worked on I never had a big problem with the COP's. I can do a plug change on those in like 30 mins. LOL On the other hand the wires are a pain in the a$$.
