Just wanted to post a thread in here, cause I havent for quite a while, and I used too all the time.
My truck threw the CEL a couple times in the past few days, I did a quick search on FTE about the uvch problems and decided to tackle the 50 cent mod.
It was pretty easy, a couple of pain in the *** bolts, the passenger side valve cover wiggled out with out too much hassle. I had to grind our Canadian quarters down a little more (then what I seen in the pictures here) but it worked perfect.
I did the passenger side first, and it was actually ok. The drivers side was my problem, and the quarter repaired it perfectly, for now anyways!.
Also retorqued everything under the valve covers, and i may be smoking crack, but the truck seems more responsive. Some of those bolts took a full turn to torque to spec!
I also took all the heat wrapping crap off of the tube, and it whistle's a little louder then I like, but c'est la vie!
Anyways just wanted to give a good experience, and a thanks to the threads created to help me through this pretty easy modification!
No idea. I never have bought an AE (should have, but never did).
Just read through a couple of threads, and thought that I would give the most common issue a try.
I was bored last night and my baby fell asleep early, so i decided to start yanking VC's off, and check around.
I love wrenching, and the 7.3 is a terrible engine to wrench on in my experience, because the damn thing never breaks down!
So I figured Id get in there, do the mod, and if it didnt work, then I would take the next step.
Forgot to add in my first post, airing down the tires so they were flat, was such a help for me. Im 6'3, running my winter tires and rims (285/75/16) and I was having a terrible time reaching those far back bolts.

You're right. The newer trucks are so much better. Here's a pic from a local Ford diesel mechanic showing how easy (and common) it is to work on a 6.4 diesel.

You know, it's actually easier to just find a small step to stand on than to air down the tires.

Ford should have hinged the cab like an old cab over semi. What a stupid design...
this is a simple mod that I've never tackled! Never had a reason to actually.....I guess one of these days I should start digging around in there like you did Sheldon
