comp 260h question

Hey guys..been mulling over the cam situation still. I was originally gonna go with the 268h from comp..now I'm leaning more towards the 260 for better torque. the 268 intrigued me for the idle..but it would just be a hassle..does anyone know if I need new springs for the 260?

Use the springs recommended by the cam manufacturer.

X2 what Harte3 said.

An engine is no place to avoid spending money. Imo, with any cam, buy the kit. There is a reason there is a kit.

68cabby: Were you only entertaining the 268H because of the lope? What other characteristics did you think you would like about it?

Has anyone ran the 268H and the 260H? If so, what big differences did you notice between the two?

Initially..and sadly..yes. but now..I've looked at the configuration of the engine. I'm running an offy c intake..that's better towards the upper rpms..I'm also running a 600 cfm carb. I know that the 600 could be a lil too big..so I figured hell..mpgs are out the door anyways. So..I was then leaning back towards the 268 because it will have the better lift on the valves to eat the extra fuel I'm putting into it. It makes sense in my mind at least it will be the same hassle with either cam. As for the cams...if you want to keep a good amount of bottom end..the 260h is the way to go. I'm not so much worried about torqe cuz I have the transmission for that..a t18. The 268 is more for mid to upper rpms..probably better for more highway miles so you can actually not have to struggle to go 70 haha

In one of your other postings I mentioned 3 cams that seemed a healthy blend of the 268 and 260. By that I mean they give a nice little lope at idle, and still maintain a power curve in the relatively low end of the rpm's.

I don't have the parts #s with me, and I'm too lazy to search them out, so you'll have to dig a bit. One is made by Accelerated Motion in Canada. Another is made by Crower Cams, and the last one is a Schneider Cam.

Okay, you made me curious and I had to look up those sites. On second look I don't even think the Crower or the Schneider would lope at idle, both have a 112 lsa. I would look at the A.M. cam, part number 21378. It is classified as a mild performance cam. It has the duration of 260, but a bit more lift, and a slightly less lsa to give it the nice mild lope at idle. That comes with a power range of from 1400 rpm --4400 rpm. You won't find one with such a good blend of all the bells and whistles.

Read their tech section. Good luck.

Thank you for that tidbit of info - more stuff to look at now, but that isn't a bad thing! Knowledge is power, as they say.

Darn it..i'm ashamed..back to the 260 haha I could care less about the idle..i like the tractor sound myself..Comp states theres no need to change springs..my head is freshly rebuilt too..and the springs look great. The po did a thorough job in having the engine rebuilt. the head is squeaky clean and the pushrods, rockers and such have been replaced. He even went ahead and had the screw in studs replaced for the rockers, how kind of him I think I'm gonna go for the cam and lifter kit..possibly with the timing set. I know they make the full kit for a reason..but in doing research from the manufacturer..the 260 would be alright to run with stock springs.
P.s...The reason I'm Wholeheartedly set on this cam swap over stock..is cuz I've convinced myself I'd put a v8 back in it long down the road...I got this engine practically free..so i figured i'd use it for now.but I love the thing..so maybe with a little more "umph" and breathing room..that v8 won't be going in!

What else have you done to your truck? Maybe I've missed if you have a different intake, carb, and exhaust somewhere. But, I think you've made a good choice of cams, even if you haven't done the rest that goes with it. If you haven't, you should eventually. Harte3 and AbandonedBronco can tell you all about the mods they've done and what's worked best for them. Personally, I'm still rounding up my parts for my performance project. I've decided to tackle my 4WD and 5 speed conversion first, and then the intake and exhaust. Luckily, I've already got an RV cam that I put in when I rebuilt my engine.

Yep I've put an offy c intake and converted to dual out efi exhaust with and eddy 600 4 bbl..so the cam is pretty much last step besides headwork to make this engine come to life. I figured the 260 wouldn't be a bad choice as I'm still getting great torque and a decent hp boost. F250 and AB have been ever so patient with me and they're great guys
