Does anyone know if a fuel sending unit from a 1984 F150 will work in a 1986 f150? I've looked both items up and they appear to be the same other than on the 1984 unit, there is no tube for the return fuel. The connector plug seems to be the same and the ohms range seems to be the same 80 - 10 ohms. The reason I ask is, the price of a 1984 unit is around $30 and the price for a 1986 is around $90. Thanks
i'm sure that they're the same when it comes to the gage sender. so if you don't need the return line connection, it should work fine. of course, if you do need a return line, you'll have to find another way to make that work
Beginning in 1985, some engines were still carbureted and some had become fuel injected. The larger opening, as mentioned by Stefan 351w, was so that where needed, the intank fuel pump, which is attached to the fuel sending unit, would have additional clearance when being installed in the tank.
The hole in the tank they fit into changed in 1985. 2" opening for 84 and older vs. 3 5/8" for 85 and up.
This is exactly the reason why it won't work. The tank hole is larger 1985-1986 even if you do not have the in-tank fuel pumps. Now you can change the fuel tanks to the 1980-1984 type and make the 1980-1984 regular non-pump senders work, IF you do not have in tank fuel pumps on your 1985.
How will I know which gas tank I have? I pulled the sending unit assembly out and it looks exactly like the 1984 one and not the 1986. If someone tried to put a 1984 sending unit on the 1986 tank, would it be obvious that it does not fit or could someone make it appear that it fits. Knowing this information now has got me to wondering. Also the return line is still in place but I noticed that it was just daggling there at the tank and was not plug up and I was also wondering if both of these issues could be the cause of me only getting around 8 miles to the gallon. But I dont smell gas leaking. I've heard it evaporates but would it that fast though?

The size of the opening. Measure the hole for the sending unit.
2" for 1980-1984
3 5/8ths" for 1985-1986
The sending unit will be too big, or too small at the mounting flange if you mis-match them.
Parts #'s... compare them. Are they the same? If so...
Measuring would be best though.
1980-1984 sending units will start with the prefix E0TZ at least six of them are listed depending on size of tank, front or rear tank, or if they have in-tank fuel pumps.
1985-1986 will start with E5TZ , again at least six choices for the same reasons as the 1980-1984 types.
These part numbers are not printed on the parts themselves though.
