Easy noob question but can't seem to find a clear cut answer. After how many miles should you change out the serpentine belt? I've got just shy of 120,000mi on my Ex and bought it with 113,000mi and noticed a little "chirp" coming from the truck this morning as it warmed up. Not sure if the PO ever changed it.
i would say you are due - i changed mine at 100k. i would think for the low cost of a belt and some time - its well worth it. Just think what will happen if it lets loose while the motor is running.
Thanks guys. Truck was well maintained but I'm guessing at 100K they were already thinking of selling and probably didn't change it out, so I'm probably due.
Going to have to look up that thread on how to snake the new belt in!
Good tip - I'll be sure to check all of those pulleys.
Speaking of... remember that "chirping" sound I referenced earlier? I had the hood up trying to chase what I think is an exhaust leak with the truck running. What I heard was more of a metallic clicking sound. The only thing I've touched on anything touching the belt was changing out the alternator. Is it possible NAPA gave me a bad alternator with either a bad pulley or bearing?
That could be a cause too, check all the rotating components when the belt is off any bearing not turnung smooth replace. I think the tensioner has a lock on it to keep it in the released position. It is a little lever.
