I actually wanted a 2500 CC truck to tow my trailer. Didn't like the prices I saw, and started looking at burbs and Ex's. 8.1 burb is pretty rare, V-10 Ex is pretty common. Found a clean southern truck locally pretty cheap and here I am. Absolutely love the truck and it does a beautiful job towing.
Ford man
have 2 kids, my son is in a wheelchair, didnt come close to fitting in Navigator with out a big hassle, with the excursion it fits easy
My sister has 4 kids and we spend a lot of time together, so her fam (5) and mine (4) we now have room for everyone in 1 Huge SUV
Oh, and it can pull a house...Bonus!!!
I know I made a joke post before, but I ran accross these posts that I made in a old thread from 2006 (about 3 months after I got the EX.) that pretty much explained why I bought the excursion way back when.

There is me, my wife, my two daughters, and sometimes ( a lot) a friend of theirs that comes with them, and our two dogs, and a cat. We tow a 31 foot travel trailer.
First of all, the Expedition (1999 4.6L with tow pkg) had a better ride than the stock Excursion. Hands down. It was easier to maneuver, and easier to park.
The downsides for me were the lack of power and the interior room.
Even when I borrowed a friends f150 with the 5.4L engine, it did not have the guts to tow my trailer well. Handling with the trailer was good to excelent. Without the trailer, it did OK.
As far as room is concerned, The wife and I have a girl scout troup. We routinely ferried the group with our Expedition and the wifes Mountaineer. That pressed us heavily for room. With the rear seat in, the expedition had a miniscule amount of room for luggage. I deplore putting luggage on top, as everything ends up getting soaked on a long trip.
When it was just a Family hoteling trip without the trailer or pets,, the rear seat would have to come out to accommodate the luggage. This left the back seat only to take the kids. OK if you have two, but a disaster if they took a friend.
The rearmost seat was reserved only for the kids, as it quickly became a leg cramp maker for adults and teens. The seat has little legroom and is very close to the floor. The rearmost seat in your Sub had a lot more room.
The Excursion solved ALL of these problems. There is now room for everyone to sit comfortably and I don't ever have to remove the rear seat, ample cargo room for luggage when hoteling or the dogs when trailering. The rearmost seat, even though it is the same seat as the Expedition, has a lot more legroom and the floor is recessed in front of it to give a better seating position. All around better room thant ANY Expedition, even the Expedition XL.
The Excursion has more than ample power to tow anything I want, and I can tow without worry. It tows better than the Expedition.
As far as the ride quality, I saw it as a trade-off. More room, better towing. The ride quality was something that could be addressed for @ $1000 or less, with a rear swaybar, springs and shocks.
Now I am happy. The ride is not quite what the Expedition had, but is good, and I have the room, power, and towing caapabilities I always wanted.

In the Excursion, we put $1100 worth of grocieries from Aldi and Acme, a microwave cart (dissasembled in cart) a new pot and pan set in a carton, several bags of assorted stuff like clothes, 3 packs of 48 rolls toilet paper, 3 12 roll packs of paper towels, two new hand toolboxes, 2 cases of motor oil, and 2 cases of trans fluid. Oh yeah, and new broom. (there's still more I can't remember.)
All this fit ibehind the 3rd seat. still had a small amount of room.
I bought my excursion as I was not impressed with the suburban style and wanted a truck but wife wanted a minivan had her take a ride in 4x4 excursion with 7.3 to prove it was quiet she loved it so we bought it instead of two vehicles
Bought mine in 2006, after a successful tour of Iraq. My wife would not let me have the 2001 Supercrew "back" so I had no choice but to seek a new to me ride. After searching the local dealer, he had two, one a used 2005 V10 Limited 4x4 and the other a brand new 05 XLT 2wd with the 5.4 engine. They really wanted the new one to go away and offered it for less than the used Limited. I drove the 5.4, didn't like the seats at all, then drove the Limited and it was over, I made the deal right then. The one I bought is a former Hertz rental out of LAX, it was exactly a year old and had 22K miles. We drove it off the lot, added Sirius radio, and some AT tires and went on a road trip for 30 days, without a hitch. I have since put another 148K miles on it and it still never fails us in any ways. We love it! This was our 5th vehicle from that Ford dealer, we have since then bought one more an 07 F350 CC truck. What can I say? We like our Fords, see my signature.
It's the most dependable vehicle for it's size. ( 7.3 diesel ) Find me something else that I can get +20 mpg, haul 8 people with gear..inside.. oh and tow 10K
I got mine for a few reasons. 1 is family, lots of room for the fam. 2 is it tows what i need it to tow while getting near twice as good mileage as my old gasser. 3 is because they are just cool! There isn't a million of them around like every other cookie cutter suv on the road. I always had a topper on my last truck so I figured the X is pretty much the same deal but with more seats.

i find it hilarious how many people have canopies on their trucks and never really take them off... this should be a huge hint to the auto companies that an suv bodied full size truck is in demand and would sell!! im glad ford made this a possibility even if only for 5 years
