Same here, no good real reason to buy the biggest SUV ever made.

I defintely do not need it (already have all the vehicles I need) but:

-- the obvious, excellent looking suv
-- great price, a lot of truck for the money
-- bragging rights (sometimes)
-- not common to see an Excursion everyday at least in my area

basically bought it for the "cool" factor. Thats about it.

I will also come in handy when there's 1 foot or more of snow on the ground.

I drove the last 15 years Dodge Rams ('98, '00, '04) all the way only 2500 models. As I get to know my wife and it comes down for founding a family
she said that she wanted a kind of station wagon, I knew that she get in love with a Q7 Audi.(a huge car, said my wife) I never said anything but thought inside: Never, No Way Ever, am I gonna pay those monthly payments nor this steelership costs)
But how to say it to a lovely woman with a strong will.......???
I took her to a import company and let her drove a 2011 Black Suburban....what should I say, she opened the rear hatch and said: WTF....is that? I said: a trunk
for all the stuff you will need when we have children.....
Of course, this Chevy wasnt acceptable, Way to expensive and no straight axles.
So I searched for an alternative car. Actually, there isnt an alternative, if you want straight axles, a ladder frame and a huge interieur space.
Those Excursion are extremely rare here in Germany, did I say RARE?
So my first way was to buy a Big Block Suburban, rip of the IFS sh@t and wrench a set of UniMog Axles under it. You get those axles here quite cheap in all versions. But while searching on the www. where I get the stuff, I did find a
2000 Excursion 4x4 V10. I jumped off the coach and say YES.....thats it.
Some calls...and 450mls later at the next weekend we were owner of our EX.
My wife loves it and will never sell it again.
At every stoplight where a Q7 stand beside us, she say always with a wicked smile: Look, Darling, what a huge Q7....and she always wonder herself, what she did likes on this small, overpaid thing.

2004, brother owned a 2003 Expedition FX4 (talk about RARE!) which was fine but decided we would do a little OOR and needed something to tow with. Reality was the trailer weighed 4000 lbs, a 3600 lb car, and about 1400 lbs worth of gear, misc stuff and passengers. That equals out to roughly 9000 lbs. Search went on for a F150 with 5.4 crew cab but they were all way expensive and 9000 lbs was pushing the towing capacity of the F150 anyway. Stumbled upon a 2000 Limited 4X4 Ex with 62,000 miles on it in the price range. Seats didn't even have creases in it, must have been a 90 lb soccer mom who drove it or something.

So basically it fit the requirements for the tow rig and as a bonus had a huge covered ares for gear instead of an open bed that I'd have to spend another $700 on a cover for.

Hmmm,,, loved the 7.3 and the look of my 99 F250 4x/Lariat/CC,,, we were moving to the moutains (outside Yosemite) and the wife said "buy me an Excursion!" Why YES DEAR was my reply!! Got the Loaded Ultimate Limited 7.3 4x4,,, no box was left unchecked,,, the DVD player is worth its weight in gold,,, only sucky thing, is the Expedition got wireless headsets in 02,,, the Ex didn't ,,, WTF,,, the keypad,,,, handy feature,,, now with three kiddos,, the foresight has paid off,,, weekly someone wants to know if I will sell it,,, we have actually looked at buying one for the future,,, but as of right now, I have 9 vehiculars!!! YIKES,, I just had to write them down to count them!! Holy crap,,, so no more Ex's for now,, but I do have 2 F350 CC/Lariat/DRW/7.3/4x4 trucks,, so the 01 is slated for a camper shell to mimic the Ex,,, dang,, I have 4 7.3's,,, I should buy stock in Delo!!
I had people ask,, "why did you buy such a big truck with only one kiddo?" My reply was,, "because I WANTED to!!" I need to get some of those bumper stickers,, "Buy more hybrids, I WANT your fuel!"

My first diesel was a 2000 F-250. I loved it dearly however with the introduction of ultra-low sulphur diesel and the price hike that came with it I had to make a decision to feed the family or feed the truck...I traded it in for a small four door car that I will not name here as it scares me and makes me sad to think about! Years have gone by longing for another diesel truck only now I have two kids and two large dogs and needed the extra space that ONLY the X can provide. Combine my love for Ford diesels and a need for large amounts of automotive real estate, and you come up with the King of SUV's!! A few weeks ago I finally got my X and couldn't be happier about it.

Congrats on the new ride, and welcome!

My beautiful wife crashed our mini-van during one of the first snow storms of the season in '99. Needed a replacement vehicle and I gently told her she needed a sturdy 4x4 that could survive those pesky fender benders. Showed her the Ex in Feb 2000; the rest is history .

Where was that in '99? I haven't seen snow since I moved here from NJ. Only up in the mountains, maybe?

I bought mine when my 98 Expedition was getting tired after 189000 miles, so I upgraded to the X to pull the TT better. Only regret was not doing it sooner!

I bought one after my kids outnumbered the seat belts in my crew cab Dodge Ram pickup. Had to have more space and still be able to pull the stock trailer. The X was the only option that wouldn't break the bank...

This could be long... my first exposure to the big Ex was back in '98-99 when I was just starting out in the product design career. My first parts as a new designer was the 2nd row overhead DVD player and roof bracket, some body cladding, scuff plates and a couple of other trim interior trim pieces. I thought "what a cool frickin truck !" but it was WAY out of my price range and I was a single 29 year old that really didn't need a big *** station wagon. At the time I had an offshore powerboat , and an enclosed snowmobile trailer that I was towing with a 1/2 Dodge Ram quad cab with a sluggish 360. I loved the truck but hated the drivetrain. Then I was exposed to diesels, a friend had ’00 Cummins so I purchased a brand new ’01 2500 Ram Quad Cab Cummins. I loved that truck, did some mods to it and just drove the hell out of it up until around 4 years ago. Life changed, I sold the boat, got married and really didn’t use the truck too often. There were times it sat for months at a time. And when we did use it , we had to squeeze the three of us and two dogs into it. Not fun. So I sold it. Tried to go without a truck and that lasted two years. So it was time to shop for a truck, one that could fit us all comfortably , and tow our #7500 snowmobile trailer. Being that it would only get driven 7k to 10k miles a year as much as I wanted a diesel I didn’t want to dish the cash out for one just to have it sit the majority of the time not to mention nothing fit us. Also wanted something we could pay cash for, so our limit was around $10k. The Excursion was the first thing that came to mind. I had been seeing plenty of V10’s for good prices. So the research started , that is when I found this site and the rest is history. I purchased a very well maintained clean 2001 4wd Limited from a fellow forum member early this summer. We love it, the gas mileage is sort of laughable and I haven’t towed anything substantial yet. I will always miss my diesel but do have love for the Excursion. We are very happy with it.

Funny story about how I ended up with mine....

I didn't always like the Excursion since I thought I liked the suburban better. At the time my brother (who is now an awesome and successful car salesperson) kept going on and on about it, how it was Ford's Suburban Fighter and had an optional diesel engine. I liked the idea of a Diesel Powered SUV, but it wasn't until I saw one in person that I was sold. My neighbor had a mid 90's suburban that he was always working on, something was always falling apart on it. He finally got tired of it, sold his suburban, and bought a 2000 Deep Wedgewood Blue, 2wd Excursion.

It didn't take long for me to notice his suburban was gone and he had a new truck in the driveway. A few weeks later, I was taking my dog out for a walk one morning and found him outside working in his yard. I started talking to him about his new truck and he got the biggest BSEG on his face. When I asked him about it, he too kept going on about how awesome it was; the power, the mileage, and most importantly the room.

My Father bought the truck I would eventually own, brand new August 27th, 2001 to replace the '89 Custom Chevy Van he bought new to haul us around as kids. As retarded as this sounds, it was love at first sight, it really was. My dad parked it in the garage, I got a chair, turned the lights on outside and in the garage, sat outside the garage, and couldn't keep my eyes off of her.

I didn't know it, but it was meant to be...... by 2003, my dad grew to hate the truck, I grew to love it, I ended up driving it while he bought another car and drove it instead. September 2003, I joined FTE and to this day it is the only vehicle I've ever owned.

I'm single, never been married, and don't have any kids, so begs the question: do I really need this truck and all this room?

Not really, it's just nice to have especially when you're 6'6, almost 400 pounds, and don't fit comfortably into much else.

The best part is that with this truck, I'm always and have always been prepared....

Whether the call of duty was to tow, haul people, haul a load, take me accross the state, from point "A" to point "B" or all of the above, The Excursion has always risen above the call and done it all without breaking sweat.

That is why I chose and continue to choose my Excursion forsaking all others
