I bought my 2002 Excursion Limited 4x4 7.3 the day I dumped the worst vehicle that I have ever owned. A 1998 Suburban that always had something wrong.... I swear that they put all the defective parts in a bin and saved them unitl they had enough to put my Suburban together... NEVER took a vacation trip without a side trip to a dealer for a repair. The WORST rig I have ever owned!!! My X protected my family in 2 freeway accidents with Drunk Drivers the first year I owned it. We enjoyed it for 178k trouble free miles. I test drove a new Dodge Cummins and a new Ford F250 on a lark and fell in love with the new Ford trucks with the 6.7. It is a better fit now that the kids are out of the house for my wife and I and 3 dogs in crates. Plus the new truck loves to pull our 10k Artic Fox travel trailer. The X was the very best vehicle that we have ever owned. I just hope that the new truck can live up to the expectations created from 11 wonderful years in the X.
when they came out i sat in the forst one in my area at the dealership as a young lad .. then i enjoyed life and next thing i knew i had two kids and ell my small *** suv was just to tiny and i found my 2wd 7.3 limmited that i have now .. fast forward 5 more years past that and now i have 5 kids ( only 3 are mine the others are my wifes from another marage) . it seats all of us and all their equipment .. suburbans look nicer ond more pleasing to the eye for some people and every now and then they do to me .. but i have more room than a burban so I love my baby ex lol

Are you going to ever ask your wife to divorce the other guy?
i find it hilarious how many people have canopies on their trucks and never really take them off... this should be a huge hint to the auto companies that an suv bodied full size truck is in demand and would sell!! im glad ford made this a possibility even if only for 5 years
I agree, if ford didn't make the X for those few years I would be driving a 4 door dually right now and probably be complaining how big it is.
I got stuck with mine.
And I love it!
I had been a Ford hater since I got burned on a '68 Mustang back in 1983. Been a GM guy ever since. While driving tow trucks I gave a grudging respect to Ford trucks as they never gave me trouble.
My previous ride was a 1994 K2500 Suburban that I had customized. I replaced the engine with a 16:1 compression from Peninsular, installed a gear drive for the came, put on a mechanical boost controller and my own intercooler set up. Long story short I dumped thousands of dollars into modifications, mechanical and electrical.
So last summer I take the family on a vacation. We are driving to the Grand Canyon with a twenty six foot travel trailer. First time pulling any weight and the EGT's are way high. In Lubbock have an exhaust shop cut out the middle of my system and put in four inch straight pipe. Helps a little but not enough. And then my rear A/C craps out.
As we are pulling into Clovis, NM I tell the wife we have a couple of options.
1) Dump the trailer and continue in the Suburban and stay in motels.
2) Return home and make necessary modifications that *may* solve the problem.
3) Pull into a dealership and trade it in on something that can do the job.
We pulled into a dealer and were looking at crew cab pickups. None of which (within our budget) really grabbed me. We are talking with sales guy and says it is not on the books yet as it was just traded in, but there is this Excursion out back. It hasn't been cleaned up yet and the windshield is cracked and we can't find the keys right now. After getting hold of the mechanic that inspected it on trade in (took the keys home with him) we started the papers. He showed up with the keys and we took it for a spin. Came back from the test drive and started transfering our stuff.
I have since replaced the windshield and the stereo (CD changer was not working so I got newer model that plays MP3 CDs) and a clip for the rear hatch handle.
I basically bought it under the worst possible conditions and could not be happier with it. The only complaint I have about the truck is those fifteen quart oil changes.
Towing and towing big. And...my wife loves riding in it. She won't drive it, but she really likes riding in it.
We burned up 2 Suburbans before buying our 2003 (6.0L) new in September 2003. Basically, the Suburbans could not handle towing at their stated limits. The Excursions have no problem doing this, when you properly take care of them. Drove the 2003 180,000 miles, then sold it and bought our 2005 with 62,000 miles on the odometer. We now have 120,000 miles on this one. So...in about 3 months, we will have driven two 6.0L Excursions over a quarter million miles.
There is nothing in towing circles that can compare to owning a 3/4 ton diesel truck that happens to be an SUV. Only the Excursion fills this description.
I ruptured a couple of disks last year and can only sit for a couple of hours before things get uncomfortable, so I've been pretty much tethered to a relatively small travel area. I got the Ex. so I could have a place to stretch out completely flat during trips when I need to. Finding a clean 3/4 ton 2wd 350 powered Sub with decent mileage was impossible as was finding a 6.5 TD version with less than 100k (I don't trust those engines enough to think that I'd get my money's worth out of a higher mileage unit. So that left the Expedition EL or the Ex. Not much of a decision to make there in my mind!
