Hey boys. Hopefully somebody has had this issue on here because the dealer can't figure it out and it's driving me frickin crazy. I've got an 06 F350 SRW Lariat and every once in a while the engine just up and quits. If I'm driving and it dies, I can put my trans in neutral and it starts back up and runs again for a couple of days then this all heppens again. It'll do it when just parked and idling as well. Sometimes it'll happen a couple of times a day and then be good for a few days before happening again. No check engine lights, no codes, runs excellent when this is not happening.
I've taken it to the dealer and of course because it's an intermitent problem they could figure it out. Has this happened to anybody on here? I'm thinking possibly a relay or breaker overheating and then reseting itself??? But which one???
When I took into the dealer they told me there were no codes in the ecm. I talked with my snapon dealer today and just luckily found out he was having the same kind of issue with his snapon truck. He found that there was a relay which runs his fuel injection module was weak. He replaced it and hasn't had any issues in about a week or so. It's an International though but would or does the 6.0 have something similar?
ficm relay is what you are talking about. and yes they both have them.
when your truck dies is it a slow and painful death or is is it like someone turned off the key?
Just like someone turned the key off but still have power on in the cab. I am leaning towards that relay now that I know it has one. It seems like it anyway, relay overheats, looses it's internal contact, cools down for a few seconds and resets itself. Are we getting closer to the culprit? If so, where is it located? I'll get one ordered up and replace to see if it fixes the issue.
imo no. i bad realy would set one of two ficm codes... or it should anyway.
my bet goes to a shorted injector coil. just a guess though.
the ficm relay is the grey on in the underhood box
Thanks Cheezit. I'll check on the price of the relay and maybe replace it just to throw a part at it and start somewhere. I'm a certified Caterpillar tech and am just putting this out there but wouldn't a shorted injector coil get a code? I know that Cat's software has codes for each injector and I'd think it would just give me a miss fire. I am by no means trying to say you're wrong but just saying what I'm fimiliar with. Thanks a lot for the info!
a random short that casues a pcm reset would throw a p1000 and or a p0603. both code often ignored and treated as no codes. pcm reset when it happens wipes the falt code that caused the reset to take place.
Got ya! That makes sense. I took my truck in this morning to the dealer for a wheel alignment and was talking to the diesel tech about this issue and he mentioned that they had an issue with one half of the FICM in engines in my vintage. He'll check into it and see if they did the repair as this truck used to be the service manager's but he was pretty confident they've done all updates and upgrades to it already. As a bonus he said that he had a FICM relay in his tool box that he'll just throw in my truck and we can start there. I'll keep you informed. Thanks for all the help and knowledge! Finding guys like you on boards like these are priceless.
So got my truck back and they replaced camshaft position sensor due to being a problem sometimes in the past and the one time this happened to me it through the P2614 code. But just that one time. Anyway, it did it again a couple of times this afternoon! They too are ruling out the relay but I had one ordered anyway(the tech didn't have one in his box) and it should be here Saturday morning. We'll see. They're stumped as well?????? Where does a guy begin before it just leaves me stranded? And of course it'll happen at the worst time.
