Industrial Carb'd 300 (pic inside)

I stumbled across this at the junkyard a couple months back...

I seem to recall reading that there were some parts of value on the industrial engines such as this. The manifold and crank perhaps? Anyone care to shed some light and how to ID?

I know the exhaust manifolds are worth something, especially to someone wanting to do a performance build and use OEM parts. Some say the industrial exhaust manifolds flow just a little bit better than the EFI split manifolds. I know that the camshaft in it wouldn't be good for anything that ran on the street because of the low RPMs an industrial engine typically tops out at. Other than that, I couldn't tell you about the crank or anything else as I don't recall seeing anything special about it.

Right, that's what I recall reading, but I don't recall if all of the industrial engines had the better-flowing manifolds or not. I'd probably want a part# for verification before I bothered.

If the exhaust manifold exits straight down, then it is likely the HD manifold which has a 2 1/2" pipe. If it angles, then just a normal manifold.

From your photo, I doubt it will be the heavy duty manifold. Take a look at the valve cover... it looks like one from a 1984 or newer engine. It has the recessed area which was redesigned to accommodate the fuel injection plenum on the later engines [1987-1996].

I saw that too, but was unsure if that mattered or not for an industrial engine.

Some industrial engines had forged cranks. I don't know about identifying one.

Maybe check with Bill. NumberDummy.

Nothing special there.

The HD exhaust manifold came mainly on the large trucks ( Like a F600 ) .

And the steel crank came in the 60's & 70's in some of the HD engines not all.

I have yet to see a steel crank in a 80's+ engine that wasn't swapped in.

If you want to check you'd have to drop the oil pan and check the crank casting #'s.

If it's a C5TE-F or C6TE-G it's a steel crank.

If it's 1N, 1NAB, 1NABC, 2NABC, etc. it's a cast 300 crank.

And if it's 1L or 1LA it's a cast 240 crank.

Thanks for all the clarifying details.
