Hey all
I have 1 1971 f250 with a 360 and a t18 4 speed transmission.
My passengeres and I have grown tired of smashing the knees of the person in the middle seat when shifting to 2nd gear and shifting to 4th gear. My friend has the bruises to prove it. What im wondering is if there is a new shift kit to throw in that will make the shifter have less throw. Id like to do this without getting a completely new transmission yet.
My friend Jacob (1972 chevy) hass made a whole new shift lever. What other ways can i fix this problem without costing me to much?
I know of no aftermarket shifters to correct the issue ( I have NPs in both my rigs). The only solution I can think of is to mock up a shift arm that avoids the center passenger and then have it replicated and TIG welded to the stock arm.
Im probabily going to torch it right at the bend and straiten it out a little bit. Maybe shorten it to and re thread it.
That linkage looks like a good idea but its for a np435. Anyone with a new process and a warner like mine know if they are similar enough to use on a np435 and a warner t-18?
HIO can i have a few pictures of the setup in your '73 and your '70?
It appears that that shifter would work. The ARM is just on a ball pivot really..so the only restriction in movement is what gear patter the tranny is..and like said before..its just attaching the bar to the cut shifter arm..so I'm sure that the t18 will work with it. I have a t18 too..quite the knuckle banger but more unique than puttin a c4 in it

'haven't modded either of my rigs yet.. it's on the to-do list for the 73 4x4 and I'm gonna live with it in the 70 until is gets a TKO-500. Btw, the 70's **** stops just short of the dash.... like an inch away.
If ya wanna tackle an offset shifter, I figure the shape would go like this:
Just a couple of inches above the tranny, the shift arm would immediately go left and horizontal towards your right leg (as if yer driving) and then go vertical. Now, what ya gotta keep in mind are the throws because I think the NP-435's reverse position would still interfere with a center-seated passenger. It's not gonna be an issue for me cuz I plan to install bucket seats and a console on the 73. The image below seems reversed but I think you get the idea:

No kidding!!!
Im going to buy it some day soon and try it out. Ill let ya'll know how it works. If its so bad ill just hand it over to my uncle in trade for a spot light.
He has a 1972 f350. 390, np435, front discs, Napco 4X4 package. Dulies.
It was a fire truck for adams county (Colorado) from 74-83. Carried a water tank and pump on the back. It has 14 rear leafs and when my brothers and uncle (about 1200 pounds) jump on the back she dont move a bit.
pictures in link in my sig. its the tall red truck.
