new to Ford

Hi I'm new to Ford and also new to this forum..

Last week I impuls bought a F350 -1991 4x4 7,3 IDI

Anything I should look up with the engine? previous owner told me that 4 glow plugs were bad so I'll change those!

Another this is when I'm driving at 60+ mph the gearbox seem to change gears all the time when I have the light switch turned on.. Does this mean I need a more powerful alternator? or perhaps one more? To big batteries? (2x95Ah)

do you have an auto or stick tranny? im going to assume its auto since your saying its changing gears while at 60+. i dont know why it would only do it while the lights were on because if i didnt know better it would sound like the transmission is "hunting" for gears, and i thought that only happened during heavy load or towing. or if something was wrong with the tranny its self. about the batteries you should already have two large batteries, i try to keep 880+ ccas in mine. and have you checked the volt gauge to see if its charging in the normal? if the gauge is reading goofy or not at all you can check it at the battery with a volt meter.

Oh and welcome to FTE! and change those glow plugs! oh and if you think you need more amps from the alt, just get an ambulance alt i think mine is 120 amps! maybe 130 i cant recall...

I's an automatic transmission.. It's the overdrive that jumps in and out.. The volt meter says something around 14 volts when running..

I'll go ahead and throw out the obligatory 'only use Motorcraft glow plugs' warning.

well my truck did that when i got it, i drove it home about 75 miles and it wouldnt shift into overdrive about 5 miles into the highway (after it warmed up) and by the time i got it home it was toast. i bought it knowing it might need a tranny but was hoping it was a solenoid or something simple but it ended up needing a tranny. hope someone one here who knows then me about these trannys pops in. if you do need a tranny look for a good used one on craigs list. thats where i found mine for $250! and have seen them on recently for less then $600. good luck hope you get it figured out!

Yes, Motorcraft is the brand. Motorcraft is Ford's name for its Original Equipment parts, so what I'm really saying is to only use the original brand. Other brands (namely Autolite) are known to wear out prematurely and/or expand in the cylinder head and become impossible to remove.

when the od light flashes it means there is an issue.
you can put an obd1 code reader on it and it will help you find your issue.
sounds like it might give you the tps code by your description.a sensor that should be changed every 50k miles anyway.that's just a guess.reading the code is the first place to start.
