hi everyone, i had the heads for my 351w rebuilt, the shop ground the valves and seats, im a little concearned about the seats now, dont you need hardened valve seats to run unleaded fuel? if the seats were ground then the hardend coating is now gone, is this gonna hurt anything?
If it was a good shop, and they usually are, then the answer is no, cutting the valves and seats does not remove the "hardening".
On older engines, and modern ones that have been cut too many times, a machine shop will cut out the old seats and press in new hard ones. Then they will cut the seats for the proper angles so the valves perfectly close and seal.
All of the new seat materiel is the same hardness, not to be confused with the hardening on the valve stem tips, or cam lobes, that can be damaged by grinding.
