Hey all, does anyone know where/who sells a good buy on a GT-40 crate motor short block? Also how well would a set of 66' 10:1 compression 289 heads work on this kind of motor (reworked to get the most out of the motor)
"GT-40" is a designation for the heads.
I assume you mean you want a 302 short block?
Summit and Jegs both list one for around $1300 (US).
A new "Ford production shortblock". For marketing purposes some unscrupulous sites refer to it as a "Cobra shortblock".
I haven't found anyone who sells it any cheaper.
On the rebuilt front, I haven't found or heard about anyone that I would trust. At least not one cheaper than that.
the problem is that all the ford crate small blocks come with junk pistons and factory rod bolts. those are the two weakness of the 93 and up 5.0's, so youd be better off just rebuilding a junkyard motor through your local machine shop.
I can't remember where, but i remember that someone sold 302 short blocks with good piston, cam ,etc, and called it a Gt-40 short block assembly, they could've meant something else but oh well. Anyway i was just wonderin cause we are going to be building a motor for my truck and i was thinking of getting a short block to save some time cause i don't have much time to do something like this.
A lot of you guys that are strictly internet bound, miss a whole lot of Print Ads and many of them are worth further investigation on their web site and then questions on these forums for someone with personal experiance.
Several of the go fast magizines have several half and full page ads for high performance "crate" motors and short blocks....many of them are very proud of the upgraded internals, and list what is in the recipe of parts.
Now that there are more than a handful of these high perf rebuilders, the prices appear to be relativly inexpensive.
I see ads for 300 to 400 HP motors for less than $3500.00
Considering your own labor, and retail prices on engine gutz, and machine shop time... under 4K for a hot motor is not bad and worth checking out.
Seems to me one of the builders calls one of the Ford small blocks a GT-40, but I am much too lazy to go look it up.
