I have some play in the third member (99 F350) and was wondering if there is a way to adjust the grear lash while in the truck. I was told there is a crush sleeve and I could just tighen the yoke nut is this true?
What kind of play are you referring to? Pinion twist, up & down, or in & out? Tightening the nut adjusts the pinion bearing preload. Overtightening can lead to bearing failure. Gear mesh is adjusted with shims behind the pinion gear and behind the differential housing carrier bearing races.
If you have twist in on your pinion then you have bad pinion bearings, or lots of wear on the ring and pinion. Tightening the pinion nut will not make things better. Loose is wear. Unfortunately there's gona be a new ring and pinion and bearings in your future.

If you catch it early you might be able to get away with just a set of bearings.
is the pinion loose and move up and down or just twist an 1/8 turn back and forth .if the bearings are tight that twist is normal your feeling the slop from the pinion through the spider gears to the axles .before you go and tighten anything pull the cover and look inside back lash is the clearence between the gear teeth and is adjusted by moving the ring gear closer or farther away from the pinion using shims .if there is up and down pinion slop your seal is probly leaking? then your most likley need to replace all bearings a master overhaul kit is about 250
Actually i/8 twist is probably about right. You will have some slop of the gears. You may be feeling the clunk in the driveshaft where the splines connect. They need to be greased from time to time.
