pinion Play

I have a 94 ford f150 with a ton of pinion play. We changed the Crush sleeve and still have just as much play in the pinion. What are our options?? what else can be wrong?? Does it use a crush sleeve or do we need shims and spacer??? it feels like the bearing is not seating far enough into the race kind of like the crush sleeve is holding it back to far from seating properley??? any suggestions here?? also is there any online manuals we can look at for the differential???

thanks

When you changed the crush slieve did you crush the slieve until it had the proper amount of drag on the pinion bearings? Once you have the proper drag, then you have to adjust the ring gear over to the pinion to get the proper backlash as guaged with a dial indicator. The pinion has spacers but they are used to get the proper depth pattern with the ring gear.

We pulled the seal and bearing from the front of the diff. pulled the driveshaft then the seal and bearing then pulled out the crush sleeve. it looks like its not crushing. but everythign we did is from the front of the pinion. It acts like the bearing is not seating into the race all the way or properly...... This rear end has a plate on the back it is not a drop in type....

you know it takes an outrageous amount of torque to crush that sleeve...just simply using a standard 1/2 ratchet may not get you enough torque.

Not sure of the exact numbers(consult service manual) but the crush spacer needs to be tightned until it has around 15 inch pounds of drag when turning the pinion without the ring gear contacting it- In other words with the pinion only installed. If you used a 1/2 in pull handle without a creater bar to crush the spacer then you probably didn't crush it. Next to impossible to install pinion and crush spacer properly without a complete disassembly of the rear and a tool to prevent the pinion turning while crushing the spacer.

Ron is right. You have to have the ring and pinion / carrier out to set the crush collar.

yup.....i think it's right around 180-200 ftlbs on that crush sleeve to crush it....GET YOU SOME !!!

if it is crushed, then you probably need to reset your pinion depth by adding or removing some shims behind that pinion bearing....best bet is to check your gear mesh and backlash, then check your pinion preload, and if it's too loose, try crushing that sleeve at 180 ftlbs and recheck....you only need like 10 thousandths on the backlash if you are over the manufacturer's specs on it, something is wrong and may require resetting the whole diff.

My bey is the gears are worn already from the pinion getting loose the first time. You know need to reset the backlash and be ready for some noisy gears. They will more than likely whine. With all the work you are going through it would be best to just install a new set of gears and be done with it.
