Diffy clunks when spun backwards

Trying to rebuild a 9" outta a 72 F-100. I followed the directions in the article posted on this site and after take #1 where I over crushed the pinion bearing, I worry that during take #2, I under crushed the pinion sleeve. It had some drag but was a bit under 5 in-lbs and didn't wanna chance it after the last fiasco. I followed the remaining directions and adjusted the black lash and gear meshing per the article. When I spin the yoke in the foward direction, it goes fine. But when I spin it in what would be reverse, the thing clunks. As in each time a new pinion gear hits the ring is what it looks like. Something tells me this isn't right. I s'ppose I could always just drive in fwd. Would an under loaded pinion bearing do this? Or the gears outta alignment? Thanks

Paint the ring gear with a yellow coating or whatever you are able to with. then set the carrier back in snug fit with a few nuts. Turn the yoke forward and see wherew you are there. Then go backwards and see where the gears hittin also. As for 5 inch lbs thats too light a load on the pinion bearing. Teeth contact marks should be in the middle of the ring gear.
I was taught that you will be needing at least 17 FT-lbs minimum to turn a yoke nut/differential with the axles in it. To put the Yoke nut on properly you will need a impact gun because you are going little by little and using a box wrench to do this just plain doesn't happen. So you will be trial and error if the drive pinion bearing is too tight it will howl like heck, if its too loose the bearings wont be doing there job very well but i forgot what sound that was. so good luck man
