Thanks for the response so far.
So, what is the difference with tuners? Fuel delivery rate, curve? Is there advance/retard function like with gas ignition systems? Am I hurting myself with the AIS?
Is the AFE-2 noisey? Like a 6637?
My main concern is temps pulling at 8-12kft altitude.

Its not nearly as simple as any gas engine. There are literally 1000's of 'options' for making more power with these engines. Some tuners do a MUCH better job than others. Good tunes will not produce high EGT's if the truck is otherwise running right. After nearly 100k miles in each truck with the same toons, I could not believe the difference when I switched tuners - the trucks ran better in every way.
AIS is fine. Make sure ya don't have drive pressure or boost leaks and that your air filter is good. Then explore better tuning for better (safer) performance.

Thanks. AIS is fairly new, which is why I was hesitant to consider another 2-300 dollar option. I do have an exhaust leak on rear driver's side manifold, but will have to wait until we get back home in a few weeks. But always good to know there are tuner options.
lol i get scared when i touch 1250 in mine so it very seldom sees 1100
EGT's are Exhaust Gas Temp's...
They are not Piston Surface Temp's.
You can run all day at 1250* and not hurt a thing, over that and you run the risk of damage, BUT, that damage is not done the minute you go over 1250*...
Example...
Your driving empty down the hwy at 600-700* and someone wants to play... You play hard and hit 1700* for 30-40 seconds or more. The chance of the pistons reaching 1300* or so is very small, due to the fact that the EGT's are not the temp of the pistons.
The pistons are cooled by fresh air with every stroke of the piston, they have oil cooling jets spraying cool (relative) oil on the bottom of them. There is also a thing called boundary air "protecting" them.
Second example...
Your towing hard, been pulling across Wyoming for the last 10 hours holding 1100* at 70mph... get into a passing situation and hit 1400* for 15 seconds... Could you get the piston temp to 1300*? A hell of alot quicker then example 1...
Its all about the risk YOU are willing to take and how comfortable you are with your tuning and such...
Thanks thats a realy good point... I do baby my truck quiet a bit just because I turned 18 and im headed down to UTI in Houston next August for there diesel program and I paid alot for the truck so I baby it
Likewise thanks Joe. A very good perspective on temp vs time. Hopefully by next years trip I won't really have to monitor the egt's, at least not to the extent I do now.

Check out the Texas Chapter when you get to Houston. Lot's of great guys and many live on the north side where the UTI campus is.
Hope you enjoy hot and humid weather .

OMG...you guys play hard up there in Oregon. I bet your speedo is pegged after 30-40 seconds of WOT from rolling highway speeds. How fast to you figure you are going by that time?
