1250* max EGT?

I keep hearing that you should keep EGTs below 1250*. I finally invested in an EGT probe and have to say Whaaaaaaat?. Just towed my 12K fifth wheel over a few passes in the Sierra Mountains and found it relatively easy to reach temps in excess of 1250*. If that is the critical number, why the heck didn't Ford include an EGT gauge in our trucks? Is 1250* really the point of damage, or is that just a point of error on the safe side?

Also, my FICM volts will sometimes drop to 47.5 volts, but mostly is at 48 and sometimes might go up to 48.5. Normally 48 even... Is my FICM okay?

I've always heard over 1300* for extended periods of time will cause damage. Short spikes over 1300 are ok but must be brief. As soon as I see 1300 I back out of it.

My Edge is set to alarm me @ 1350 (in case iam not watching).

Ideal FICM voltage is 48 but it changes slightly constantly (47-49 normal).

1250 is the limit as to what you will want "continually" run at. There's a lot of trucks hitting 1700 degrees during 1/4 mile passes that are still running without issue. If you are studded I personally wouldn't be worried until you're hitting 1500 consistently. Even in my truck with heavy programming it takes a push to hit that number.

Thanks guys. There were some pretty steep grades, but now I feel much better about the numbers I was reading.

I was running Matt's unlimited tow tune. Pretty much stock engine tuning but some transmission shifting strategy, as I understand it.

When I towed my 10,100lb (dry weight) 5th wheel I was never able to passed 1,400*F under 3,000 feet altitude. IDP STREET tune.

I would say to stay under 1,400.

If you are towing and you are bouncing around 1,300-1,400 I would not pass 1,400 because all of the parts that touch the exhaust gases are already very hot so even short bursts of high egt's can STILL be BAD...

^^^^^ This all depends on the condition of the truck. The poorer the shape of the truck, the more impactful the egt's will be...
