I have a 78 ford shortbox, I found a 92 ford that was rolled am considering changing the motors, mine has the 351m and the 92 has a 351c TBI, also am considering changing the front end over and was wondering if it would be possible since mine is leaf springs and the 92 is coil. I am also thinking when i do the engine swap to just go ahead and swap the tranny (mine auto, 92 5 speed auto) and the transfer case. this I realize would be a project am planning and doing it next summer as a frame up so I can sandblast my 78 frame and would be easier to access. any thoughts about problems I may encounter? or is this even possible?
Anything is possible given you have the time, tools, skills, and facilities to do it. Instead of asking us, you need to decide for yourself if it is realistic project to undertake.
Problems that will be encountered? LOTS! Clearances and metric vs SAE adaptation just to name a few.
Why don't yo just rebody the 92 frame/running gear with the 78?
I'm thinking your 92 would have a 351windsor and a AOD or maybe a AOD-E wich are three speeds with overdrive. Unless of course someone changed them. The only five speed offered in 92 was a manual.
Wont be a hard project you better make sure the engine is in good working order being that it was rolled it may have been run dry, But stuff like the fuel tank will bolt right for the electric in tank fuel pump but your going to need to change rear end,Gas pedal,And dash...VSS is on the rear end housing, Not sure if the gas pedal is a cable on a gasser, And the gauge cluster is motor driven not cable drivin speedo, The steering column is a cable not rods...And the electronics.
Its not bad when you have a complete parts truck you just have alot of modifications to do,If you have a welder and patience and a little $$$ you can make it work.
thanks yes I have the time and the welder don't have alot of money but so far its sounds like things I have thought of. yes i agree it should be a 351w and yes its a aod (not sure if its an e) but the guy said 351c and 5 speed auto so I was going with what he said the frame on the 92 is bent which is why I was thinking of doing the extreme swap, I am getting the 92 for scrap price and it still runs and is all complete I did not know about the rear end sensors and also its a 4x4 I think with push button? (sorry haven't did alot of homework on it been busy studying for LSAT) where my 4x4 is hubs can I convert to hubs or would it be better to stay with the non hub version? yes I was thinking changing the dash and after measuring I think it might work. I realize this is going to be a huge undertaking thats why I was figuring it would take all next summer. and while I am down to frame I can sandblast and repaint it (If I do end up undertaking this I will post pictures for those interested) I was mainly curious on the front ends since mine is leaf and the other is coil....thanks for the information so far
If its a 4x4 the VSS might be on the transfer case not too sure on that right in the early 90's they changed alot of stuff around, Yours being a leaf truck F250 isnt going to make any difference the drive sections on the same side...If you want to see what the brick nose dash looks like in a dent go into my album mines been converted to a 91 gauge pack.
The trans will be a AOD and its a three speed-Lock up converter-With over drive.
yes my is an f 150 but it has leaf...someone might of changed it....the 92 is also an f150...I have a ranger with the scissor front end too its an 86 haven't had many problems, but I do like my straight axle just was looking at the benefits of having ABS and upgrading the front end seemed like the way to go just basically switch one to another. A friend mentioned that I could bob the frame on the 92 (its an exteneded cab) and said when he looked at it the frame isn't bent that bad so I could switch my body onto the 92 depending on how the frame looks....just seemed like the same amount of work...
but the guy said 351c and 5 speed auto and that guy is most likely 100% wrong...... easy way to tell is if it is fuel injected thats a dead give away ....5.8 it is a windsor.... the cleveland hasn't been built since 1974 like f250custom78 said and they have never made a 5 speed auto in that year of truck but that is beside the point the electronics will be a pain to change over IMHO just use your 78's body on the 92 frame

Well if its the truck in your album I can see the coil spring and radius arm...
