I have been working on a 98 Dodge Intrepid, 2.7l with a charging problem. The fusible link is fine, the alternator is spinning, and the dash light works. I figured the alternator was dead, so pulled it and had it tested. It tested fine. Back in the car it worked for a couple minutes, then was back to being dead. I really don't want to pull the alternator again, it's a bit of a process that involves draining the coolant and twisting my hands at angles they weren't designed to turn.
I have been really scratching my head over this one, and would appreciate any insight anyone might have.
how do you know it is dead? Is the battery light coming on? It's not uncommon for a bad one to work sometimes and not others. I put a Remy in a car and 1 week later it came back because lady said the battery light came on once or twice. I replaced it again and havent seen it since. I would stay away from those cheapo parts store parts, spend a little more and buy the most you can afford.
On my 05 mopar van, the PCM controls the alternator charging. I think that it was the same way on my 96. Could be the same deal on the Intrepid -- I really don't know.
I found out the connector on the alternator was bad. Got a junkyard one (new is not available) and it's charging nicely now.
That alternator is in the worst possible spot, I had to pull the lower radiator hose, the left side horn, and rotate it just right to drop out through a small spot in the frame. Horrible design, any tighter and it would have required at least partially removing the engine.
