2007 F250 117,000 miles. I have a wierd problem going on. Most days my Edge CTS shows that my alternator is charging at 13 volts or better some days it doesn't leave 11 volts. No matter if it's charging or not my dash battery light stays on. It has new batteries from December 2014. Any ideas?
Most likely it's the alternator as it is the only reason for the dash light to turn on. You can check the connector and wiring by the connect as some have had a problem there, but that's rare in my experience.
That alternator needs to get replaced ASAP! I would avoid driving it any more like that if possible. It can kill the FICM very quick that way and a FICM is a lot more expensive to fix or replace than an alternator. As long as you aren't running a crazy sound system or light setup, winch, etc, a replacement 140a alternator should be fine. I bought a reman 140a from autozone 11 months ago and no issues yet. They come with a lifetime warranty, so even if i had to change it out once a year, it's easy enough that It would still be worth it for me.
If you don't mind spending more on a better alternator, Ed (ficmrepair.com) sells some pretty good units.
Luckily, the alternators on these trucks are about as easy as it gets to replace. It's a 15-20 minute DIY if you haven't done it before, 10 minutes if you have someone to help with the belt tentioner. Dieseltechron has a great video on youtube on replacing the alternator.
Alternator lights on the dash, only go on when they don't have current supplied, hence an alternator problem. Alternator brushes go bad after time and will sometimes work when first started up and cold, giving you those 13 volts or so. However, when they warm up, many times the brush contact with the stator becomes intermittent and they work sometimes.
Sounds like what other's have pointed out...replace the alternator.
