j ballon, you just said what my son did to his truck when he first got it. He's short of money so he pulled the gas from the front tank which wasn't working and put it in the back tank to make his gas go farther. The gas smelled really bad and that is when he started having trouble. I guess it another save a penny, spend a dollar time.
I've seen this exact same thing with old fuel. I think it gums up the valve guides and boom, bent pushrods. Make sure you clean the old fuel out of the tank, lines and carb before you start it.
Ok, I have the intake off and found 1 lifter apart but all on the pan between the heads. Found some metal between the heads and the pan(?) had some damage where the pushrods had self destructed. Found all of the pushrods and parts. The top of the motor looks really clean, not all gunked up like my 1977 when I pulled it apart to replace the 2bbl for the 4bbl. I was going to pull the heads but something, not sure what, wouldn't let the heads come off. I had the head bolts removed and when I tried to lift the passenger side head with the hoist, it never let go like I thought it would. I talked to the guy at Orteillys who also works on fords and he said he thought there were 3 dowel pins through the head down into the block. Are there some dowels through the head down into the block or is there something holding the head onto the block. When I started lifting, the truck started coming up instead of the head coming off the block
There are two locating dowels but I've never seen them prevent a head from coming off. They are just a slip fit not a press fit.
Are you SURE all 10 bolts are out of the head?
If you are absolutely sure all the bolts are out then take a thin wedge (chisel, screwdriver or something similar) and drive it in between the head and block at the corner. See if you can break it loose. Don't get carried away, you don't want to damage the block or head surface.
I'm sure we got all 10 bolts pulled out. I used the engine hoist and the whole truck started coming up. I didn't pull it off the ground but the front end was coming up and I really didn't want to find the truck on the ground.
SUCCESS!!! I pryed up on the lower front corner and it popped loose. The front cylinder has oil in it but the rest looked good. The head looked fine. Now comes the drivers side head.
