360 lifter question

I have a 1969 F-250 with a 360 and I was wondering is it possible to remove and replace the lifters with out removing the heads and intake manifold? The engine will start and idle alright with a small but noticible pop coming from the carburator but the minute I give it any gas and raise the RPM up the poping/backfire from the carb increase and becomes a lot louder. I have tried everything that people have suggested as far as replacing all of the tune up parts and I checked the timing and vacuum advance and it is all fine. When I pulled the valve covers off one of the rocker arms I assume it was an intake valve was loose the push rod was very sloppy The valve does not appear to be stuck so I poured some mystery oil down the lifter tube and the cranked the engine for a while and I guess it may have got a little tighter but not much. Could this me my popping problem and if so does it sound like a bad lifter or a bent push rod the motor only has 85,000 miles on it but it sat for quite a while during a transmission rebuild I just need some advice so any help would be great. And thanks to all who responded to my previoud question concerning this problem.

360 lifter question

The intake has to come off in order to get at the lifters. It seems you have replaced most of the tune up parts, but what about the timing chain? If it has slipped it could be causing you grief. Just a thought.
