Yea, your right.. Any input on this Mark? They just seemed to jump straight to rebuilding or buying a brand new one right away. But at least the more I talked to him, the more info he seemed to slip out. I am going to put a pressure gauge to it and see if it drops like you said also before I go doing anything. Thanks again.
Well, I'm going to get started on it today.. Drain all the fluid, take the pan off and see what it looks like in there. Talked to a friend this weekend that's worked in a trans. shop for years. He's saying a fried soliniod, so I'll start there and see what it looks like. I'm not sure how to check for a bad valve body, but I'm sure I'll figure it out. More to come.
Ok, so it's been a month or so. Sorry for the delay. Tranny is out, gone through, valve bodies and all and still nothing. Had the tc cut open, good. Put a new selinoid pack in, went ahead and put a heavier duty torque converter in, we did notice the inner pump split rings were worn, but other than that, all the clutches, plates, everything looked good inside. Valve bodies seem to be working just fine, nothing jammed up or nothing. Could the range sensor or another sensor cause the tc to lock up like that? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Luckily I have some great friends that have kept me in their spare vehicles!!! Thanks for any ideas.
No, not yet Mark, that's my next move once it's all back together and in the truck. I am going to go ahead and replace all the sensors on the tranny and transfer case since I don't need to do a rebuild on the hard parts. Plus, I'm going to pull the wiring harness and give it the once over also.. Make sure it's got good flow and no bad wires anywhere. Called ford and was told they don't even make that harness anymore. Would like to just replace it as well. Any ideas where to get one? None of the junk yards up here have one. Even with all the sensors replaced, I'm still only $200 or so into it, so if i could replace the harness, all the electrical should be good. Is there any relays or fuses I should be aware of? Thanks for all the help.
my truck did the same exact thing at a stop light 60 miles from my house while riding the country one day...killed the engine in any gear but ran fine in park and neutral...had to get towed home.......when i got home and got the truck off the tow truck..i reved the engine up and threw it in gear to get it in the driveway...and it worked...died immediatly after the engine idled down...Got the tranny rebuilt after that and no problems since 70k miles later.....
Hotpocket, we pulled the complete guts out of the tranny twice last night and couldn't find anything. Clutches, snap rings, everything looks great. My friend that's worked on transmissions for years couldn't believe how good it actually looked with 140,000 on it. So I'm headed in the electronics side of the house and see what I can find. Thanks for the input. I actually was hoping to find something broke inside of it. At least then I'd have known..lol
Ok, I know it's been a while, but here's the final skinny on what was wrong with my truck. At some point, a previous owner had probably chipped it, then instead of taking out the chip when he/she didn't like the results they got, they just cut the wiring instead. Over time this degenerated the pcu until it fell below working condition, causing it to not send the correct signals to the selinoid pack and letting the trans shift properly. Yea Mark, I did do alot of work, but hey, lifes all about learning experiences...lol This was all well beyond my scope of knowledge, and I'm glad I took it in finally. Interesting side note.. Ford does not make the computers for the 2000 Superduty V-10 anymore, or any of the wiring harnesses. My mechanic had to search far and wide to find one. He finally did in GA. When you ask the dealer what they would do, they kinda look at you dumbfounded and perplexed. They don't have any answers as to why this all is either. Or at least I couldn't get one out of them.
