I know this is not the right forum, but it's the one I see the most.
I bought a set of used chrome OEM side steps yesterday for my 06. The PO had an all black truck so he painted them with a rattle can thick flat black paint. I can rub with my thumb and make a small tear much larger.
Any good ideas what will help remove the black without making tooo much of a mess? I think the chrome will look better with my white truck.
you might want to try some paint stripper. put it on, let it work and hose it off. I know you don't want a big mess but cleaning up that mess is less work than some of the other messes we make working on trucks.
Hose the area down first before applying the paint stripper. Otherwise you could have paint stains on your driveway in addition to the oil and any other stains that are present.
John, I hope you got the mounting brackets for these side steps, cuz FoMoCo does not sell them by them by themselves. Only available with the steps.
And, I hope they match the cab type your '06 is. Regular/Super/Crew Cabs are all different lengths.
autoanything.com has side steps (running boards) and a gazillion other accessories.
Thanks for the kind thoughts Mr. Wilson, I do have the brackets but they are for a crew, mine is extended. The rear holes don't line up, but you know me, I am a modifier, with tools they will ride proudly below my cab.
We were able to rub most of it off. Kept rubbing and it kept rolling up showing more chrome. Glad he didn't prep it.
Now I gotta figure the hole inset thingies so I can install more and bolt the brackets on. One on each side needs to be moved to another set of holes like engine perches for power steering on FE trucks.
Looks like you move one of the two brackets then switch sides.
Bill I temped it, got the brackets hung, laid the bar on, can reuse the front holes but will have to drill new attach points at the rear. They are on the under side so it shouldn't be an issue.
Ford should have had steps on all later trucks. You 7 footers prolly wouldn't need it but us short guys wear the side edge off, now the seat has to be repaired.

You can get running boards, stationary or power and rectractable bed side steps for all the newer piles. But on most (excepting Lariat Platinum, Harley-Davidson), are an extra cost option.
You would think that for 45 grand, running boards and/or a bed liner would be standard equipment. Dream on.
At 6-5, I still have to stretch my right leg to get into oversized tub, but getting out is a piece of cake.
You know of course, that side steps were available for 1963/66 Styleside pickups, they fit into the quarter panels, were also available for Econoline pickups.
But, one had to have a Billy Barty sized foot to be able to use them. Normal person could only get a coupla inches of their foot into the shallow little darlin's.
