I recently bought a 1968 F-100 Shortbed Custom. The vin plate has two color codes: one for Wimbledon White and one for Rangoon Red. The truck is currently all red with only a white top. I have seen many trucks from those years with a white top, a different colored mid-section, and a white bottom (tri-tone...?). Here's my question: Is the tri-tone paint scheme the only option besides the single color paint job, or was it possible to get the two-tone paint scheme I currently have, the one I described above. In other words, has my truck been re-painted (and possibly wrecked), or is this a valid factory paint job? If this is an original paint scheme, is it possible to look at the vin and tell if it was originally a tri-tone or a two-tone?
From what I have seen the trucks with 'three tone' which have the roof painted as the bottom of the truck have had the cab molding going across the cab to divide the paint up. I don't know if that went for all of those but every factory one I have seen has had the molding to hide that 'three tone' line. Then for the two tone trucks like mine, the side chrome hides 99% of the line. Does your truck have that cab molding right above the gas tank filler?
I'm not sure about the vin, I'm sure some oldies here will
yeah it has the chrome strip that runs the entire length of the middle of the truck, but I think that is standard on the custom cab or styleside trucks.
no no, not that chrome. The cab molding chrome. The chrome I am talking about runs directly above the gas filler neck and runs under the back window over to the other side. That is how they hid the paint like when they two toned the cab itself.
My 69 has two tone paint, the roof is white along with the lower half of the truck (below the body side moulding) the tail gate is the same color as the hood and the upper half of the truck (above bodyside moulding). You realy need to see an original paint scheme in order to determine if yours is correct. I may be able to take some shots of mine so you can see. E-mail me if interested.
The sales brochure for my '72 shows both types of 2 tone paint; roof and bottom of body one colour, middle a different colour. But it also shows the roof one colour and the rest another colour.
I have a brochure for my 69, and if I remember right, it shows three combinations. Mine is the aqua and white. cab aqua, middle white and bottom aqua. There is another 69 up here where the two bottom colors are the reverse of mine
