I am getting ready to do a coolant flush on my truck. Is there any advantage to adding a coolant filter to these. Trucks? I have seen them for the 6.0s but not the 7.3s. I am assuming there is a reason for that. Any info would be appreciated.
The advantage is getting all the silica sand out when they were made. Your water pump will thank you for it. I installed one on both my 7.3's and I couldn't believe the crap that was trapped in the filter. Worth the money IMO.
Great. Thanks. I am going to have a fuel filter, coolant filter, 2 oil filters an canister transmission filter. Dayum! I thought the oil changes were expensive before.
The first time: When you see the coolant isn't flowing into the degas bottle anymore. After that, I don't know because it is still flowing good. I first filter plugged in just a few weeks.
Put a filter on my truck using guzzles' directions, replaced the pump, and changed coolant (not ELC). Plugged the first filter in a week, the second a month later, been using the third for about 4 months so far. Just keep an eye on the flow into the degas bottle. When the flow stops (or nearly), change the filter.
My coolant went from rust colored to deep green with the first two filters. Well worth it for my piece of mind (and probably saved the new pump).
Doing that same setup this weekend! Also doing heater core cutoff at the same time.
To the OP, note that some filters include the coolant additive in them (24071, for example). 24070 does not, that's the route I'm going.
I don't think you need a kit, you can get all of the stuff individually pretty easily.

OK, that's two more of ya saying that you can see the coolant going into the bottle. Are you using the Guzzle setup, with the "T" in the 3/8" line going to the degas bottle?
The reason I ask is, I was wondering if I DO use the T, will the coolant flow UP to the bottle, or does it just flow down to the radiator? I was wondering if I need to put in a separate feed to the bottle in order to be able to see it flow.
Yep, thanks, I did that a while ago. Why they EVER thought going through the belt was a good idea, I don't know. I'm guessing that plan was motivated by an accountant somewhere.
