Hello everyone just had a quick question. I changed out my power steering pump on my 93 5.8 and I was just wondering, what is a normal amount of noise coming from these things? I know these trucks are infamous for power steering pump whine but I don't know how much, if any is a good thing.
The steering is now smooth as can be and the only time it whines is at a stop and turning the steering wheel. I understand that is when it is under the greatest load so I'm expecting some noise is normal? Overall it is %100 better than the old pump, though. Thinking maybe I didn't bleed the system well enough or maybe it has a leak somewhere that I'm not seeing.
Does it only make noise when cold, or all the time?
I assume the fluid level is correct, if it is and you have been driving it around, I dont think there is any air to bleed out, as it would have bled while driving.
What fluid did you use in the new pump? I have read on this forum that using a premium ATF like Amsoil multi-vehicle will quiet the pump drastically. I have been siphoning the reservoir dry and topping off with amsiol periodically to change over the fluid. It was noisy at first but has stopped once I started using the syn fluid.
It's a continuous noise through all operating temperatures. Fluid level is good and I have been driving it for a couple days now. I used a standard power steering fluid in it, maybe I will give the ATF a shot, thanks for the tip.
