I have a 1995 F-150 with the 5.0. In the last 4 or 5 years, I have replaced the power steering pump several times because of the whining noise it puts out. Was this a problem with these trucks or is mine just plagued? I see alot of other older 150's and I don't hear them making this noise. This happens whether I'm turning or going straight. You can really hear it any time when you accelerate. Any solution to the problem that I'm missing?
Thanks Guys. The fluid level is good. I'll try the Lucas fluid and see if that helps. It really gets annoying sometimes when the pump is louder than the engine noise....
Every truck we have at work wines 15 of them, no matter what I do run lucas in the 2 I run but still have the wine. But the better the fluid the quiter they are. Good luck

If you want to fix it permanantly stop using the Ford pump and swap in a GM Saginaw pump.
Not olny is it silent, but it has a lot more pressure so it steers so much easier too.
Kragen/Cardone part number 20-6244 is a direct bolt in, and you will also need a pressure hose from a van because of the larger fitting to go with it.
Or go to a junkyard and find an Econoline van of a simmilar year with the same engine and take teh GM powersteering pump, the aluminum pump bracket, and the pressure hose.
I did the swap a few months ago, and it was the best thing I ever did. I wish I did it sooner. It makes it sound like a completly different truck without the whine, and it steers much easier too so if you have big tires at low pressure the steering is effortless
Mine whines so bad I have to shut the truck off at Dunkin Donuts drive-thru---
I have had 4 f-150's and all have whined some--Think I will try the new fluid !!!
Gary
I have had three Ford trucks an 85 F150 A 91 F150 and my current 96 F250 and none of them have wined. Are you guys using tranny fluid in your pumps? I always use clear power steering fluid and have never had a problem
I have never had much luck with parts from places like that except Napa it seems like there stuff is usually better or you can really spend some money and go to your Ford dealer.
I had that happend to my 1994 f150 4.9L 5sp about in the year 2000, I drained and flushed the old fluid and filled it with new tranny fluid and to this date it has not winned anymore. I would never put anything from GM in my fords! Good luck!
