A "Carrier" is what your ring gear bolts to. It has its own two bearing and your axels slide into it. A carrier in an open differential will have spider gears in it. A mini spool replaces the spider gears and is help with a cross in, just like the spider gears. A full spool replaces the whole thing.
A mini spool is just as strong as stock
A full spool will be plenty strong, and a great deal lighter.
I think that most of the people that don't like spools have never had one. They aren't much good in the ice and hard pack snow, and they are harder on tires, but the differences off road is amazing. I like them better then lockers. Lockers, at least the ones that I am familiar with have a bad habit of locking in when you don't expect it and making your truck do a dance when you come out of a corner.
I think spools are awsome, but I wouldn't put one in a rig that I drive on the street most of the time.
