Ya if its a smoking deal like that it would be a go. But if had to pay $80-100 per hour and take 3 hours or so not so good
depends how terrible of a job it is. I'm likely going to pay a very reputable shop to do the timing belt on my TDI. Can I do it? sure. It's 8 hours of shop time. (so since i've never done it before, It'll take me 12) So it costs me a weekend and the tools I need are $220+shipping ALH TDI Timing Belt Tool Kit
At that point I look at it as about 450/hr for labor. And since the shop covers anything they do wrong... I'm going to look at it as cheap insurance. (I'm going to have SCI do it, if anyone cares to know)
My studs on my exhaust manifold that bold to the y-pipe are broken. exhaust manifolds have to come off the rectify the situation. If I can't get the studs out, I'm going to have to replace the manifold. Seems they are about $120/each. I'm going to need to do the other side soon too.
are you referring to the Expy? If so, you won't like what happens to the bolts the hold the manifold to the head...
I am.
and I'm sure I won't. I'm betting they snap, and have to be removed in some fashion that I'm absolutely going to hate. But I don't have a choice, unless you know of a way to fix my problem. (studs that hold the y pipe are broken)
Just curious, how much shoptime would you estimate on installing a pair of pacesetters?
Ford dealership quoted me $1100 worst case (they said they may need to replace the manifolds) I laughed and said thanks, I'd do it myself.

Well, it would totally depend on how many bolts broke. But I would expect more than half. I see no need to replace manifolds unless they are cracked. But I would figure around $500...

The studs on the bottom of the manifold that bolt to the y pipe broke. In order to get to those, it looks like I'll have to pull the manifold.

When we had the Audi I elected not to do work on that. It was the wife's car and didn't want to deal with it. Fortunately the VW had a recent timing belt change. The ball joint and the half shaft was easy to change

Eh, they are easy timing belts. Especially the 1.8 and 2.8 motors. TDI's are a bit more involved, but no biggie. If you could handle the axle and ball joint, you could do the timing belt too.
It's close. Close enough that I could store some stuff in it. It just takes a long f'ing time when you're doing it by yourself. 14 foot boards don't hold themselves in place very well. It needs to be primed/painted, but that might have to wait until spring when it's warm enough out unless next weekend turns out to be above 50* for a while.
I'd say you're done as far as painting goes. Even if air temp is in the 50's, the board temp is only in the 40's. As a guy who's supposed to sell paint, I tell people that this time a year, as far as exterior paint goes...
Happy M**day guys! Almost over!!! I rushed home from class today at noon to get supper going... Bourbon soaked pulled-pork, in the crockpot at 12:30 and at work at 1:00. Pulled it apart about 7:15 tonight and was awesome! A little cole slaw from the local grocer's mart, and a bourbon and Coke to wash it down... Great meal. Hope everyone else had something good tonight for SUPPER!
