Question For Number Dummy

Hey Bill.

I need a new speedometer cable and ordered one from DC using their parts selector. I ordered one for a 71 F100 with C6 transmissoin, THey sent: C5TZ17260N. The packaging says 65/66 Mustang.

It looks like it might be a little short, though I haven't tried installing it.

Can you confirm that this is the part number and size i need?

Thanks!

C5TZ-17260-N .. Speedometer Cable-64.80" long / Carpenter sez: 1967/72 A/T * / 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog Parts sez: 1965/72 2WD M/T / Does not fit any Mustang.

C5TZ-17260-Y .. Speedometer Cable-70.80" long / Besides other applications: 1971/72 F100/350 360/390 C6.

What's wrong with the original cable? If the housing isn't kinked, you can buy a universal inner woven steel core kit from any autoparts store, cut it to length, coat with graphite, install in housing.

* DC's 1967/79 repro truck parts catalog (2011 paper version), page 64.

Does that mean their catalog is wrong? the 70,80" version isn't even mentioned in the online search.

As for buying the replacement inner, I figured at $20 for a replacement cable, I wouldn't bother with swapping out the inner cable. Although after this error, I'll head down to the auto parts store and ask them.

Is the C5TZ-17260-N cable correct for your application? Not according to the Ford truck catalog it isn't. You said yourself it looked too short.

So is DC's catalog right or is it wrong? It's wrong. More than likely this C5TZ-17260-N cable is an autoparts store "fitz-all" replacement since package is marked 1965/66 Mustang.

C5TZ-17260-N = 64.80" long / C5OZ-17260-A = 64 15/16" long = 1965/66 Mustang V8 4 speed only.

And just saying 1965/66 Mustang is in-correct:

1965/66 Mustang I-6/V8 3 M/T = 48 11/16" long.

1965/66 Mustang I-6 4 speed & I-6/V8= 58 13/16" long.

Thanks, I just wanted a clear answer so I can call DC to return this. That way perhaps they can also refund my shipping costs since they were wrong.

Any obsolete replacements exist, Bill? Or should I stay away from old parts for the speedo cable?

If a repop seller refunds your shipping costs, hell has frozen over and Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein are conservative Republicans.

C5TZ-17260-Y .. Speedometer Cable-70.80" long / 1971/72 F100/350 360/390 C6 / Obsolete

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 3 = 800-543-4959.

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 291 = 800-476-9653.

Hey Bill. Thanks again!

So DC decided to refund my shipping costs and send me the replacement cable for free.

THanks to you, it looks like they'll be updating their website to reflect the correct part for the speedo cable. They're selling the wrong part. They actually don't even list C5TZ-17260-Y on their website. Maybe that's why they they still have so many in stock, haha.
