anyone have experience with the old 'cascade in the radiator' flush trick? i'm troubleshooting overheating problems and my radiator was pretty grungy so i gave it a try...twice. each time i put about a cup of cascade in, brought it up to temp and then let it idle for about 20 mins. the second time i drove it around for those 20 minutes. flushed with water and there is definately a big improvment (i can finally see aluminum in the rad!) but i also still see rust/chunks. peaking inside the radiator i'd say its about 90percent aluminum and 10percent rust at this point. do i keep going? at what point do i assume the radiator is trashed?
fyi, i've already replaced the thermostat as part of the diagnosis of my overheating problems. i bought the new t-stat from a ford dealer, but i can't remember if it had the infamous rubber seal...might have to take it back out and check.
The only time I've used cascade is for a bad oil cooler that coats everything in sludge. I'm not sure that it works as well for removing corrosion and scale. Some commercial versions have a mild acid solution that seems to work pretty good. If cascade works for it though, by all means keep us posted.
