a couple intake questions

my e350 has been missing the tube from air cleaner to grill since before i owned it. yesterday i found one at the junkyard and picked it up, but it just looks horribly restrictive. has anyone compared power running with vs without it? i'd like to have it to keep my air filter cleaner, as the fan stirs up a lot of dust, which is getting thrown right at the filter

the other thing that bothered me is that when i changed my air filter last week, i aparently didn't get it seated quite right on the manifold, so the screw felt tight but wasn't. driving it this way, the truck was much louder, as though the muffler had been gutted. correcting the filter solved the problem. is it normal to have that much intake noise?

the intake will sound close to the exhaust minus the pop type of noises.

remember the only thing between you and the valves is the air cleaner on a diesel

Can you buy those tubs for the air cleaner to the grill? I need one also. Problem is one side is round and the other rectangle.

i don't know about buying them new. i found one at my local pick-n-pull, and gave them 5 bucks for it, as well as in IP for about 10, filter head for 10, vacuum pump for 25, assorted lines for free, hitch reciever to mount up front for 15 - yeah, all kinds of good stuff

as for that tube, sure the one side is round and the other whatever, but looking at it, i'm seeing the air cleaner end goes from about a 4" round to about a 1.5 x 4" oval, which is less than half the flow of a 4" round. the other end is somewhere around 3", again a restrictive size. i'll give it a shot and see how it performs. i'd be happy if i couldn't notice a change except in air filter life.

Have you removed the 'soup bowl' from the air cleaner lid yet? I never noticed a difference running with the intake tube vs running without on my 6.9. Removing the soup bowl made a slight improvement though.

hey Josh the soup bowl is on the top cover of the intake. The hold down bolt runs through it. Sounds like you got a good deal at that JY.
