[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Jun-02 AT 11:35 AM (EST)]My engine was rebuilt about 5 years ago, and now it started running a bit toasty. In the process of doing the thermostat, i checked the radiator. It had alot of deposits, (granuals,,etc) in the core. I am going to get it rodded out. There is a company that sells a filter to put in the upper radiator hose. Its a mesh that traps the crud. It comes in 2 sizes, and 2 styles. One is clear, so you can check the condition of the screen, the other is solid brass. I had one on my old ranchero, and they work really well. Just remember to clean it now and then. It is sold on a mustang website.. Type in "gano coolant filter" on your browser and it should point you in the right direction. 35 to 45$ sure beats doing a radiator! Take care,,,,,,
Wopster,
Those screens are used to catch block scagg. That's the rust flakes that peel off the block when you don't run enough inhibitor. A radiator can be boiled and brushed at any shop for about $40. It should be done about every 5 years, especially if you drive a chrysler, but pardon me, I digress. After having your radiator brushed many times the runners will start to burst. That's probably irrevalent with respect to you, though. If you change your radiator fluid every two years you may never need a brushing.
If you have rust scagg in your radiator, your motor has sat for a long period of time with no coolant in it and is shedding the scaly rust that has formed in the water jackets. You will need to have the block boiled at a machine shop to get rid of it. Next rebuild should do.
