The engine may be able to handle 5w-50 especially if the truck sees all warm climate temps. The supercharged 5.4l in the Shelby mustang specs 5w50 from the factory however that vehicle obviously sees different use. The guy at that works at the Cleveland block plant said they do testing with 5w-40 without issue. I ran 5w-20 in mine until the warrenty was out then switched to 5w-30. The V10 speced 5w-30 originally. IMO I would stick with a 5w-- for sure. I would rather run a 5w40 than a 5w50 though.
I came to this thread because I am looking to replace my Isuzu Diesel engine/ boat anchor with a V10 (that I'll eventually convert to run Bi fuel with LPG) and am thinking you're pickin at Brian over what oil he uses to the extreme. I may not be the one to brag since my engine all but threw a rod after floating out my valvetrain down a hill, which broke my rocker arm forcing my push rod up through my valve cover. The engine now runs on 5 instead of 6 cylinders so the fuel seeps past the piston and into the crankcase, which turns my three gallons of 15w40 into four gallons of 1w2 within 100 miles. I've been driving it like that for 900 miles (she runs a little rough) so I can't imagine being one class of oil away from recommended doing any "damage" to his engine. Its going to push through all the galleys just fine, I'd think.
