No that is NOT normal IF you are moving along at highway speed. If you are crawling along due to a bad road/dirt road/steep incline, it is normal and that is why nearly everyone upgrades the tranny cooling system.

pulling 3 k should be a walk in the park for your truck- Could the trans cooler bypass valve be stuck closed ?Edit - Just asking about this as I thought I remember reading about a bypass valve in the line but not positive it. To op - Do a search for clogged trans cooler & read Mark Kovalsky' posts- He is the Ford trans expert on the site.

It normal if the torq convertor isn't locked. I had this problem and didn't know it till I put on a good gauge. At 20 degrees outside slow up switch backs no trailer my trans use to get up to 220. So pulling a trailer its going to be hot. Change the trans cooler and get some tunes that helps the trans shifting and lockup. If you don't you will replace your trans sooner then later.

You also might consider taking a water hose to your radiator(on the outside) and cleaning it and then follow it up with compressed air to clean the heat exchanger on the outside of the radiator. This is best done with the intercooler out of the truck. My intercooler, radiator and ac condenser were hammered with clay dust and tiny pebbles from the Prev Owner/s.
Best to add an additional transmission cooler and to verify that you have flow from your transmission to your radiator. One guy recently purchased a Heavy duty transmission cooler from Orilley's for his truck. I have a manual transmission so I don't have these issues for most of my driving.

Before spending $$$ on this "problem", when you again attack this hill, pull the shift lever down into "second" (2), to ensure the TC is gonna be locked, and then see if it still over heats at the 30 mph speed.

Should lessen it. If it does, then the unlocked TC was the cause.
