I'm going on a 4x4 trip weekend after next and will have a full payload plus a 22ft trailer with a trail rig and want to get a tranny cooler in before the trip. I did a search and found that a lot of people were recomending the trucool max setup from deieselsite.com Checked it out and it seems like a great deal, espcially with the psd mouting kit so you have everything you need to bolt it right up, my question is about the bypass valve though. What model years have it and which don't? I assume the newer ones have it but I figured I would check here first. I have an 02 Ex so do I need the one thats designed for the bypass valve or without?
Mine is a '00, but I'm pretty sure the trans cooler bypass valve is the same. The 4R100 has a cooler bypass valve located on the outside of the trans. Here is how you can tell for sure if you have one -
On the passenger side of the transmission, there are two trans oil lines that come out of the trans and go to the radiator and small trans cooler up front. If you have a cooler bypass valve, you will see an oil line, which sits parallel to and very close to the trans housing, that connects both lines. The cooler bypass valve is located in that line.
In fact, occasionally that bypass valve will fail. If it does, your trans will heat up very quickly. Yet another reason to have a good quality (not a stock POS) trans temperature gauge.
