Hello all,
I just picked up a 2000 7.3 extended cab 4x4 that was in an accident.
Young kid thought that all you need to be able to tow heavy stuff is a hd truck. he had a 10000lb bobcat loaded too far back on a trailer not made to haul equipment. Flipped the truck/trailer right over on its roof.
The truck is in great shape considering what happened. No frame damage runs and drives. Also he was on "dads" dealer plate so it still has a clean title.
I am looking to you fine Ford guys for a little help on replacing the cab.
What I am wondering more or less is the year range cab I can put on there?
*I know 99-03 relatively close, but are there any subtle differences that would sway you away from one year to another. Ie my 4x4 lever is on floor while my brother in law's is on dash.
Also can a cab off a gas f250 be used?
I have been trying to do research on my own, but all that usually pops up from google are replacement part websites not any useful information.
thanks in advance,
this is my first time on this forum so I apologize if this is posted in wrong section
Any 99 -04 cab should work. A cab swap isn't difficult just time consuming. You could try finding one with a blown motor and dropping your motor and trans in. Welcome to FTE! Also where are you located?
Thanks for the input. I was originally thinking of swapping my motor into another truck. But every time I take a look at this one I find brand new parts. Pretty much the whole suspension is new. Still clean and shiny for the most part.
I am in New York, Rochester area.
My hope is that the cab of a gas 250 would not require much extra work. They are really common, at least in my neck of the woods. My main concern was that wiring harness's are different, and I am assuming the brake systems are completely different due to the lack of vacuum on a diesel motor
Basically if I could afford to outright buy a 7.3 I would have already. And I would be posting more usefull info
Since you have the complete truck any cab will work its just a matter of swapping everuthing over to the new cab. The hydroboost and wiring are the two main things. But you have it easier because you have a complete truck.
Thanks for the help.
Update on my project, I found a 99 7.3 ext cab. Runs and drives but has no title and 100,000 more miles. So I now have my cab and many extras. So far I have two trucks and I'm only in for 4000 into this.
Thanks for the help.

Check with your state laws on cab swaps. Here in WI you have to bring them in the title for both the frame and the cab and they will combine them together into one title and issue that. You might have problems with the missing title on the cab if your state's laws are like mine. A bill of sale from the previous owner will do the trick here but maybe not everywhere.
I've fixed a few vehicles here in NC with salvage titles for my parents in NY. NY DMV are pain in the ***** about inspecting vehicles like yours or if they have a salvage history. A state inspector goes over the vehicle and the paperwork/receipts with a fine tooth comb! Check with DMV first before doing any work to see what NY requires. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
Not really concerned about DMV.
I have pictures to upload, what is the preferred way to post them on here?
I know many forums have their favorite way to do that.
I have the cab off of truck #1, was a lot easier than I imagined. I fallowed the 6.0L walk through that's floating around the net. Thanks by the way to the original poster of that. Pulling the cab off took about 4 hours, but this was my first attempt. I see the next cab coming off in about an hour.
If anyone has any suggestions on things to do while my cab is off feel free to let me know. I plan on doing all new O-rings on hpop. I'm also going to make sure my oil pan and gasket are top notch. As I believe you need to undo motor mounts and lift engine to do this.
Happy Friday from my shop to yours
Will get pictures of my swap on here tomorrow.
You really need to look at the up pipe to collector gaskets. They wear over time and it is about 400$ for Bellowed up pipes if that is what you want to do. I just put new donut gaskets in because I didn't want to spend 800$ for the bellowed up pipes on my early 99.
All the stuff for the turbo related items on my early 99 are much more expensive because they are smaller and slightly different. I plan on upgrading that system in the fall. Make sure you protect all of your electrical devices from the rain and sun....Especially the IDM which should have been inside your drivers side fender well mounted on the outside of the firewall above the plastic that protects your tires from slinging a bunch of crap up there. That item is about $800 new. All of the elctronics are pricey so keep them BONE DRY.

You better start posting a few more post so that you can get to 25 post or you will not be able to upload your pictures. You have to upload to something like photobucket and post the IMG link in your post to get the picture on here. It cost too much for all the memory for all these people so you have to use photobucket. You currently have 21 post to go.
