The UPS guy showed up today at 6 PM with my OBD1. I did the scan and got code 122 which is "Throttle Position sensor below minimum voltage." Can someone please tell me what that means and what's my next move? Thanks....

You called that one correctly. Can you tell me where it is on the truck and can I get one at NAPA or Advance Auto? Thanks....

Code 122 displayed during the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) tests indicates this: TPS circuit below minimum 0.6 volts when the throttle is closed.

Replace the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

For reference: Fuel Injection Technical Library » Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

Thanks for posting that link. It says the TPS is "at the end of the throttle body" so where exactly is the throttle body? Can I get this part at NAPA or Advance Auto? Thanks again....

A photo from Steve83:

A thread with some GREAT TPS info from another forum: Ultimate Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Thread - FSB Forums

Yes, both NAPA and Advance Auto carry TPSes but I caution you to use only a Motorcraft brand. Many folks have reported issues and other problems when using an aftermarket version. It's your money and your choice.

The engine shown in the pic above is a 5.0 and I believe the "Dude" has a 4.9 so it doesn't look exactly the same but similar, and if I'm not mistaken to get at the TPS the throttlebody has to be removed from the motor(only 4 bolts.. not hard) and that means a replacement TB gasket will be needed.

I'm picking up the TPS this afternoon from the Ford dealer across the road ($70 with tax) and I'll get the gasket in the next couple of days. I have a cast on my right hand which comes off next Tuesday so I can't do anything until then anyway. Thanks again for the info....

Is this the right gasket?

Buy Felpro Throttle Body Gasket 60846 at Advance Auto Parts

The guy at Advance Auto says he doesn't think it is but their web site says it is. I'd like to make sure I'm getting the correct one. Thanks....

I assumed he had a V8, but it is virtually the same principle. If I was near my truck I'd take a picture sicne it's got a straight six.

I know you have the six banger, but this video will still be of some help....
1995 F150 Erratic Idle Part 1 - YouTube

Shows how to replace TPS sensor on the V8 engine. Really not too hard to do. The hardest part of the job was actually getting that darned throttle cable to snap back on to the ball joint on the throttle body.

Thanks for the video. When I went to the Ford dealer to pick up the part I asked the parts guy if he could come out and show me where it was on the engine. He couldn't find it so he went and got a mechanic, who showed me where it is. When the mechanic saw the cast on my right hand he said to park out in back at 1 PM Monday and he would install it for free. So I'll be there and I'm going to give him $40 or $50 for his trouble. That will work out great for me....

Props for being generous, but that's perhaps too generous for what should amount to a 5-minute job. That said, if the TPS is original, the two screws that hold it in place will really be in there and you probably wouldn't get them out unless you had a 90-degree screw-driver of some sort.

I went over there today and the guy fixed it in about 15 minutes. The passing gear works fine now and the "check engine" light is off. He does work on the side so he's coming over on Saturday to adjust the brakes on my '37 Packard. Thanks again to those who responded to this thread....
