And the hardest one of these to change in my opinion is by far the PSOM. not because it's hard per say, but it takes the longest and you have to tear apart the dash. The rest are 2-4 bolts and an electrical connector and its out.
But if you don't think you can pull the codes, why does it matter what it could or could not be? Sounds like you're probably going to end up taking it somewhere anyways...
Hopefully it's not the PSOM. Tomorrow I'm going to call 3 or 4 parts stores and see if any of them have an OBD1 thing to check what the codes are. If one of them does and can narrow it down maybe I can replace it if it's just 4 bolts and a plug....
I wasn't planning to buy one. I thought they did these tests for free? I'm hoping one of these stores will still have the old model around and can run the test for free....
You may as well get your wallet ready and head on over to the Dealership, none of the suggestions made so far seem to be to your liking!!!!
My suggestion would be to sell the truck before his wallet is empty. Owning a ~20 year-old truck without any understanding at all of how to do the most basic diagnostics/repair is a recipe for a costly experience.
Owning any vehicle without the basic know how and taking it to a shop all the time is definitely costly. But if you listen and learn on here, we will walk you through it. Ask any questions about what you don't understand and someone will explain it to you. Ya just gotta do what we ask so we know what's going on in your end.
Hopefully it will be something like a bad Throttle Position Sensor. (code 122/123). About 50 some odd bucks for the Motorcraft part. You didn't get a Check Engine light?

I could live with having to buy a $50 part. Yes, the "check engine" light has been on since I bought the truck in June.
I ordered the OBD1 and the 6 foot cord today from Amazon and it should be here on Thursday so I'll report back here with the results. Thanks again to those who left helpful and positive comments....
Sounds like your TV cable shift lever could have slipped off of the TV rod inside the transmission.
Take a look at this video, skip ahead to 4:00 on the video, watch it until 5:00 to see what I'm talking about. That lever in the video has a nut and bolt through it, to keep it from sliding back off of the TV rod, and these trucks did not have that from the factory. If that lever slides off of the rod, then you won't have Overdrive.

Thanks for posting the video. I have overdrive but I don't have passing gear. The guy in the video never mentioned passing gear so I'm hoping this TV cable is not my problem....
